. Any ideas or Im I better off running new wires back to the CD player?

they should be connected mate
 i am going to fit some to my 90 hardtop soon  its the same with fronts as my 90 didnt have any but when i brought my focals they just plugged in CSK Automotive

I suppose that depends on what they were for (no mention of the wire colour), did they crackle when you pressed the brake?  |

Hi Mike, Just done this. Went for the 6x9" speaker surrounds, there are wires already in position and they are already connected to your stereo. Plug'n Play...

Should be plug and play just make sure the polarity is correct. Not much point running new wires if your running off the HU as the power won't be that high (normal for the wire gauge). If the power was being supplied by an Amp then it would be a must. If your running 6x9's the power output won't be half as good running off the HU due to lower output than if you had them running off a small Amp. Most HU's are approx 4x 40w or 4x 50w RMS most 6x9's could handle double that RMS easily and an Amp would supply it however the HU isn't designed for such power outputs. 6x9's and other speakers will of course work off the HU but you won't get the kick out of them you might expect. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Are you sure those wires are plug and play. I thought they went up to the bulkhead with the chassis loom but just went to a plug under the bonnet and didn't carry on into the back of the stereo. Mines a 110 though so may be different to a 90!

Shouldn't be different to a 90. If they don't go back to the radio loom then new wires would be needed. Would be a pain though both protecting them and routing them all the way along. They should be colour coded in the rear and on the radio loom so easy enough to check. Already sorted with mine, run new cables in when rebuilding, up the windscreen pillars and along the roof line to the back.
Maybe different wiring now on puma's, pretty sure previous models only had rear speaker wires connected at the front on South African spec vehicles for some unknown reason! |

I'd say that's a better more accessible routing than how LR do it. As far as I know they are all in a single cable run along with the rear lights and so on. As I mentioned before re wire gauge as standard it should be fine with the Hu supplying the power but anything amped I certainly would use larger gauge cabling. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Steve ( I presume ) do you know which is which ? All the prefitted speaker connections have two female blocks for each speaker. A smaller one with a clear cover and a fatter one with a black cover. Which is pos and which is neg ? Thanks |

It does or it will affect the speaker cone in an adverse manner basically making it work in reverse to how it's designed. It's positive and negative for a reason. The most simple way to find out is using a Multimeter. Sounds more complicated than it is. As a general rule the negative will be black or at least one colour black even if it's a tracer and the positive colours and or white. Not a rule to go by though as such... Can't go into detail why reverse polarity isn't good but I do remember reading that it won't do the speakers any good & it messes up sync between other speakers. A Multimeter is relatively cheap and invaluable with electrical diagnosis. I'd rcommend you get one (or borrow) and test using that. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

We'll agree to disagree then and your advice is good to follow, as ever.
But it's the difference between the cone pushing and pulling or pulling and pushing. It'll move just as much air either way. It's quite common for speaker pairs to be wired differently (for reasons I don't really understand if they're coming off a production line) and they push/pull differently and cancel out the bass notes. Luckily there are CD's you can buy to test the phase of speakers to make sure they're working together. I have a pair of KEF speakers like this, they sound a great deal better when running in phase. Have a think about how you'd wire up a set of bass speakers, you can do it in series or parallel which is effectively mixing up the poles to change the load on the amp. |

Problem with the defender wiring is all fours wires have black in them.
Black/yellow and black/orange on left side Black/green and black/blue on right side You definitely won't hurt them either way you wire them up they will only be in or out of phase with the fronts. |
