That's a Degraff R1200-4, designed to be towed by people without a B+E licence but as usual that farcical law fails.

Without a B+E your allowed to tow it behind a ford focus but put it behind a a 90ht with a kerb weight of 2.4 tonnes and it's illegal but obviously safer...

I had ours replated to 1100kg. It's a great trailer.

Are you sure about this?

From the degraff website "This Trailer can be towed by a Saloon/ Estate car,4x4 or Van providing the Kerb weight of the towing vehicle is the same as or more than the MAM of the trailer and the combined weight of the 2 together DOES NOT exceed 3500kg"

Is the weight not done on the actual weight of the vehicle and trailer rather than plated weights?

Not trying to argue or anything I just want to make sure I am well within the law!

Thanks

You're mixing up gross and kerb weights.
KW for a 90 is 1850kgs so even with a 1200kg trailer it's still nearly 500kgs in credit....

If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can drive either:

a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500 kilograms (kg) Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM (with a combined weight of up to 4,250kg in total)
a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as it is no more than the unladen or ‘kerb’ weight of the towing vehicle (with a combined weight of up to 3,500kg in total)

Your right bobble I said kerb when I meant GVW (MAM). It's the GVW that is used in for those without a B+E licence.

GVW for towing vehicle + MAM of trailer must be 3500kg or less. 2400+1200 = 3600 Crying or Very sad

Kerb Weight for towing vehicle must be greater than MAM of trailer. 1698 >1200 Smile

It's really hard to take the RB1200-4 to it's full capacity. It can take 9 boats, or 10 if you put them really close at the bottom. So the must you can put on is 4x Fours 2x Eights split and a couple of doubles or singles. But is you to have this much on there won't be space of all of the blades and riggers. All in it's about 450kg of equipment.

There loads of other threads on other sites detailing this.

If towing a boat trailer you also need to be aware of the guidance from the association of Chief Constables relating to transport of human powered water craft. This details the allowances we have for overhangs and overall length which is much greater than what is allowed for any other type of trailer.

http://www.britishrowing.org/sites/default...idance.pdf

Who else can tow a train 90ft in length without a specialist licence!

The issue with the wording on the Degraff site is the interpretation of the words

The combined weight is always assumed by the police as being the maximum mass of the car so they will always use the GVW of the towing vehicle and the MAM of the trailer in working out the "combined weight"

To make it clear Degraff are 100% in their wording, it comes straight from the DoT guidance:

That's assuming you've loaded the 90 to its maximum Gross weight though.
With a kerb weight of 1800 kgs, plus a 1200 kg trailer, you're still only at 3000 kgs which leaves 500 kgs before you reach the limit. Even with driver and passenger at approx 100 kgs each that's still 300 kgs in credit.
If Plod want to read it as being maxed out that's fine. Then as soon as its on a weigh bridge they've got no case and I also don't totally buy it that they'd assume by default that it's at its MGW anyway.

Bobble, the actual weight of the vehicle is not what is used to calculate what is allowed for those without a B+E licence. I wish it was but it is not.

For those with B+E, either by doing the test or by Grandfather rights the specific and actual weight of the vehicle and trailer are what is used.

Fair point. It's only a few pages in to the Gov.uk website that they start defining MAM.
So, Degraff are potentially placing customers open wrong side of the Law?
