Dear all,
Looking to buy a mid box replacement pipe and K+N filter for my dads 2.2 this xmas. However I cannot seem to find anything realted to 2.2, they all seem to be for 2.4. 1) Am I correct in saying the 2.2 has a common exhaust and airfilter with the 2.4? 2) Are these modifications good starting points for a completely standard engine bay? many thanks PS - the rest of the car is modded... will upload a pic Click image to enlarge |

I dont know of anything to replace the mid box with except something smaller as its the size and weight of a small whale . I have taken it off my 2.2 a few wks ago and a HUGE difference in how the car breathes and runs , smoother and slightly quicker . Its definately not a silencer as no increase in sound so its only there as a restricktor to slow you down and have less emissions . I wouldnt replace it though .

Why not?? Surely something like this would be good if it fits? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DEFENDER-90-2-4-...1e723e266b |

Yes obviously it needs something in its place , a big gaping hole just wouldnt do now . My local stainless exhaust guy made the straight through pipe using the existing flange and bolts . The pic looks about right but what if its a little off ? The pipe needs to be custom made mate . I also had the little end box and tail pipe taken off . |

Air filters are the same - and there are quite a few modification that you can do the air box,
The down pipe is different from the 2.4 (as 2.2 has a DPF), but the rest of the exhaust system is the same. Really if you are changing the exhaust, then the engine calibration needs adjusting to suit.
The CAL is expecting to see a certain back pressure, and changing this can lead to issues especially with turbo control. Removing the centre box alone shouldn't cause any major issues though. Having taken off both boxes i can report your findings correct mate . Very little noise differance but definately alterations to engine management system as i can feel and hear it making changes , also sometimes when i get into my drive the exhaust is so hot i cant touch it but id like to think that the DPF and CAT in the down pipe are enough restriction to not hinder or cause the turbo any probs . After all , there both behind there and there was no DPF in the td5 . Its this emisions control system and its computer that are causing my new 2.2 to be such a headache and the reason iv removed both boxes . Wish you high tech wizard companies would find the magic that unlocks this 2.2 brain so i can get a decent running def again . |

not a topic hijack, but almost...
I'm interested in that same exhaust mod, but I read a lot about center box, mid box, decat, mid pipe and I get confused! What is exactly what ? And where are they located? Does anyone have an exhaust diagram and can explain these mods ? Thank you! De-cat is the removal of the catalytic converter which is located in the downpipe which is near the engine end.
The mid box and centre silencer is the same thing and is the centre section as standard the big box part. There is also a rear silencer which is located just behind the rear O/S wheel. On mine the system is standard EXCEPT I have a straight through centre pipe section which in affect removes the centre silencer which give a good sound and relieves a little back pressure but not su much so as to cause issues like perhaps a full straight through system with a de-cat. To be honest I don't know the point in the centre silencer except for minor noise reduction. It's a large heavy clumbersome thing that hardly has a purpose and is vulnerable to off road damage if not causing damage to other components in the process. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Because there wasn't a readily available aftermarket straight through replacement. Only custom made jobs OR a full exhaust system. IMHO when you reach a certain stage you may as well have a full SS system de cat and the works rather than replacing parts and leaving the rest. Fitting a full system would be pretty straight forward I'd have thought but the engine end and cat would probably be more of a pain.
Talking of complete SS exhaust systems what is available on the market off the shelf? I can think of Griffin & Alive but that's about it. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
