Bj, you have a hi lift mounted on the rooftack - but you also have the side steps installed. Where on the vehicle can you use as a jacking point for the hi lift and when / how areyou going to use it?

I have been with a group of Englishmen: Toyota Land Cruiser x2, Nissan Navara x1, Discovery x2 (one had broken water pump on the first day and left the group), and my Defender90. Why 40 liters of diesel? I had 2x10 liters on the roof and an empty 20-liter Jerry Can inside the car. I filled it before the desert and it is still filled. But I was very close to use it , ( I had already emptied my 20 liters from the roof-rack ) , warning light from the fuel tank began to light (that is when 11 liters from zero), I saw almost the same moment, a tank station. Yes I have a hi lift mounted on the rooftack - and I also have the side steps installed. The jacking point for the Hi-lift is not on the side of the Defender but on the front bumper : Click image to enlarge ... and the rear jacking point : you can see the small hole to the left of DK on the picture No. 2. It is of course also a hole on the right side, but it is covered by a sticker (magnetic). ( I also have an "adapter" for use directly on the wheel. ) Water! Bottled water to quench your thirst (40 liters from day 1) - had to buy more on the way, and 20 liter for hygienic use (did not use as much of it ). It went well with my original Graber tires, but I was very nervous on a mountain road where I absolutely had no traction in the mud. It was just as bad for the other cars. Now in October / November I had my winter tires (Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT 235/85 R16) on a trip to Italy, (4-day "off road" travel Tirreno - Adriatica), and you can see how they were on the muddy track. All the other Defenders had "mudtires". Goodyear Wrangler was the most common. To me it seems as if in deep mud it does not matter what kind of tires you use, they are all miserable. Here is my mud video: Actually I should not comment on mudtire, because I have never overcome it. It is a year since my last post.
Was in the spring at the North Cape, and this week I came home from a lovely trip across Italy, coast to coast, where I could test my mud tires. They stood the test very well. Very nice bjartin!! One of only a few proper overland Defenders I saw on this forum.
What I find very strange on this forum is how little a lot of the members (don't stone me but...esp those up north) know about overlanding. Most of us outside Europe actually use the Defenders for more than just "Mall-crawling" or sitting behind the trucks on the M1. Questions like: "why the extra fuel" and "when do you ever use a Hi-lift jack" and "why a winch" and "why so much water", and, and, and, etc... always surprise me. When we do propper overlanding down here you need at least 120-140 liters of diesel. When heading off into the Richtersveld in RSA or the Namib desert or Northen Kaokoland in Namibia or into North Botwsana or transversing Northen Mozambique from west to east it is not at all strange to have stretches of 600-1000km between filling stations (and then you still have to hold thumbs that the next filling station have diesel today or you are stuck!). Water...anything less than 60 liters and you will have to wrestle a Lion for his spot at the waterhole. My Hi-Lift jack saved my 90 a year ago from certain abondonment in the Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana. So all and all, it looks like a well equiped overlander. |

November 2012 my Defender was 2 years and 6 months old, but had come over 120.000 km and therefore I had no longer any factory warranty.
That's probably why "accidents" begin to occur. I would change to winter tires and used my High-Lift to raise the wagon and the shock absorber (right, rear) fell down, it had broken just below the upper "cap". (photo). Click image to enlarge I was annoyed with several weeks of a loose object in the rear that made a rattling noise intermittently. I had repeatedly emptied the car, but the sound was there constantly. After mounting a new shock absorber the noise disappeared. After visited Greece, when I controlled oil level in the differential (front), there were lots of metal shavings on the level plug, I have magnetic plugs. It turned out that the differentsial was about to be destroyed. (photos) Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge In Albania, I was unlucky, a large stone (God knows where it came from) got in the way of the front differential and "the diff.guard / slider" was bent backwards and pushed the track rod so it was crooked. Back in Denmark I could see violent and uneven wear on my front tires even though we apparently had the rod corrected. Click image to enlarge The next day broke my left rear shock. I paid 5 euros to dismantle, weld and assemble it again. Back in Denmark: Mounting a new, 50% thicker.
