All Camel Trophy vehicles, well in the days when it was done in 110s, were on skinny tyres too..

My New 110 has 7.50 R16 XZLs on (Bit slithery on the road, much better turning circle)

My old one has 235/85/16 Grabbers on (Better road manners, quieter)

Best tyre I ever had were the Michelin OR 7.50 16...Came standard on my 90Td5...Great tyre in mud, rock and tarmac...even in the sand if you lower your pressure to 1.8 or less depending on weight you're carrying they're great...
Tried 255/85, 235/85 and 265 and those Michelin OR 7.50 are IMHO the best to suit all types of terrain...
Just bought 235 again for my 110 because it was the only other option on my documents and because those Michelin cost 35€ more each tyre ... Sad ...although next time I think I'll save some extra 140€ to buy those....

Oh, and tried some General SAG 7.50.......fabulous on mud and rocks....awful noise and drive on tarmac! Razz Regards

Floatation tyres are good but do have their limitations. I think someone posted something on this subject with regard to the Darien Gap expedition and breaking differentials.

Having said that I have a set of these that I think will fit on the 110:

and with regard to that Youtube clip - LR have been there also:

There was also the Forest Rover, as developed by Roadless for the Forestry Commission. Modified bodywork and big agricultural wheels/tyres on Studebaker axles. They looked something like this:

Nowadays we have roads in the forests and what few Land Rovers we do still use generally have ATs on. But the conditions pre-roads required large floatation tyres. Peat bogs and the like are definitely a case for the wider footprint, this is the sort of wheel/tyre that the vehicles in these conditions will need to use:

7.50 16 factory jobbies on my 110 and it went fine around a pay and play in cannock in feb of this year.

on wet grass i have always found momentum to be the key (if you can get a little run up; never had traction control).

i personally have never liked wide tyres based upon my first LRE instructor (18 years ago) saying that you would be amazed at where a standard defender will go - and i was

(i did have 285s on a 265bhp v8 and admittedly the on road traction was good - but would spin on wet tarmac Embarassed )

Ha! I had XCL's on a Series III many year ago. Great tyres in the rough stuff but VERY NOISY on tarmac. Darren

I've got XCLs on at the moment.. they sound like a plane taking off, when you get above 50mph. Really turns heads.

About to swap them for XZLs too.
