Thanks for that I've just read through those topics are there seems to be a massive spread from high teens to mid thirties which seems absolutely nuts to me. I understand there will be different mods and driving etc but from the posts provided most seemed to say they drove sensibly and generally only had roof racks (also if your checking mileage you tend to drive a little more "miss daisy") But overall it seems mine is in the lower end so it's time to start looking for a fault!

Reading your post did make me laugh as I had a 'dim' moment and your reference to high teens to mid-thirties I momentarily thought you were going on about owners age......
I personally don't really think you have a fault. I know it's not relevant but my 90 Puma only returns me now marginally more than yours. I do have a short roofrack and chequerplate but I don't really let it bother me. At best on average I think personally 22 is at the lower end. What you must ask yourself is "At best and worst what is it you expect to return on MPG?" A remap may give you more but dependant on nmilage and driving style it could take a couple of years to pay for itself if you can keep light right-footed. What about some diesel/cleaner treatment like Millers for example? May be worth a try for a while and a relatively cheap option too perhaps. To be honest I thought mine was only a mile or two low until people started saying they got high twenties which made me think I may have a problem. I asked the question originally because I have a feeling my brakes may be sticking occasionally and thought the mpg might highlight it as the garage say they're ok. I don't actually pay for my fuel myself and can use as much as I want so it shouldn't bother me but I like my cars and don't like things being wrong with them

As an example for the last 20,000 miles I've used a 'Road Trip Lite' free application for the Iphone. Over that whole milage I've averaged 27.35 mpg (On a 90 remember). Peaked at 30.57 mpg and troughed at a little over 16mpg (motorway caning). Since fitment of roofrack over a year ago I haven't achieved over the average at all. Dependant on use maybe consider removing the rack for a while and rechecking? I reckon without it you'll hit the 24 mark perhaps. Just an opinion. Looking at the TD5 specific thread and this one for 110 TD5s 24-27 mpg appears the norm. You're not far off that yourself. The higher milers seem to be the 90s which makes perfect sense or they've had running gear modifications. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Your roof rack will make a big difference.
Even a set of roof bars with a bike up there dropped my 90's MPG down to 30 from 32 on a run. That's on a 200Tdi, but Td5s should be hitting mid-to-high twenties. 110s obviously will fare worse than 90s! |

Just added up the last 3000 miles worth of fuel reciepts and stuck thm onto Fuelly.
My average is 28.4, the best was 30.2 Thats all been with the 110 fitted with a patriot rack and rooftent. I do however have a discovery transfer box fitted with helps. Roof tent and rack are comming off soon so what sould improve. 2002 Defender 110 DC |

Cheers k9f, I think your right mine isn't too far off really and as I don't pay for fuel I won't bother with the running gear mods but I might rebuild the front callipers just for my peace of mind

Early 20s for me, but lots of off road play and local trips, mud 33s etc... The Alive tuning remap certainly got it out of the high teens.

ok so all of yous who have apps and milage linked up to phones/computers and the like,all very good,but how do you get 30 mpg out of a td5?
i guess my 22mpg defender has a problem? now where do i start looking? |

Well, I went on a 350 mile round trip at the weekend and managed to make 24/25 mpg so it's probably just my lead foot and the roof rack bringing it down a bit. I think I'll still rebuild the front callipers but I feel a bit happier now. Cheers for the replies

Round trip to Birmingham (320 miles) just completed with large tintent on tow, managed to get 21.65 mpg, which I was pretty surprised at (granted downhill on the way back )
That's a 110 puma utility 2011 model, no mods , standard tyres etc. First time I have bothered checking mpg, so might do it without the van and see what happens, it'll be interesting to see. I guess a lot of it is down to the right foot.
