The modified MAF has a longer scale to it, so whereas the standard one will run off the scale at around 630, the modified one will continue relaying accurate air flow data back to the engine ECU beyond this point.
On the standard MAF, when the airflow goes beyond the scale, it feels like you have hit a speed limiter and the engine misfires. I'm sure it will go beyond 90. I've never been in it when it had gone anywhere close to it. Not my thing either, but each to their own. He used to own a nice 90 XS which was tasteful enough, but this ended up on its roof on the A303 near Mere. |

I'd love to collate as much detail on the MAF as possible because it's the single most frustrating item I know of for TD5 owners. Whether modified or not the reliability is rubbish.
On modified vehicles there are a few different ways to address the issue of one running beyond it's scale. 1. Bypass it by a. Drilling holes in the airpipe downstream b. piping air from the airbox to downstream of the sensor 2. Modifying the MAF so that ratio of air flow to output frequency is changed which can be achieved: a. Mechanically (by increasing the internal diameter) b. Electrically (by modifying the sensor itself) 3. By limiting to output to the maximum the ECU will recognise like you do with a boost box, the only product I know that does this is this from IRB (and it works very well) http://www.irbdevelopments.com/adjustable_box.html What I would really like to see is an aftermarket MAF that would be a plug in replacement for the VDO one with built in adjustability and a direct mechanical fit to the airbox. SOmething that would be priced at a similar point to a genuine VDO one, be more durable so benefiting the standard TD5 owner but less restrictive and with a better range than the standard unit.. Only this takes time and money and that is now all focused on the new emerging Puma modification market understandably. |

It will only run beyond its scale if the engine has been remapped. Under normal conditions with a standard MAF, there isn't an issue. In fact it is not always an issue with mapped ones.
Also, Alive sell the modified one for around the same price as a Genuine Part MAF. |

All my MAF system issues were solved with a Green air filter and a Genuine Parts MAF. Job done.

Too much chequer plate, but as you know, the reason for fitting this stuff is generally to help hide things which shouldn't be there. It was practical for him because one of his lines was a tree surgeon.
It does/did have an ARB rear and front air locker. It had a problem when it was in last time where diff oil was being forced up the hose to the compressor. I got a kit from Pete at FirstFour to sort that out. You'd have seen it around Bristol/Bath, probably near a Burger King. Considering what the vehicle has been made to do in it's life, it is doing well. The engine, gearbox, transfer box and diffs have not had any issues, but then it has full servicing each time it was in. He is the sort of guy who hammers it around Salisbury Plain, breaks it, and leaves it with us for a few weeks (with instructions to add accessories) to fix/valet before collecting it. Unfortunately, when it was built, it had a rear section modified on the rear of the vehicle which was untidy. It has a Warn 8274 on the rear which obviously means that the rear 90 Td5 tank is moved to a Tdi position under the driver side. Even the fuel set up here was a joke and that had to be sorted out properly. The electrics were dangerous and when we fitted the load guard, the lower section was used to mount the locker pump, ECU, fuse boxes, wireless winch control etc. It works well now. It's not bad. It is certainly a lot safer and runs better than when he purchased it (for 24k ). I'm a bit of a purist, so this doesn't appeal to me either. |

I'm sure that this used to be Brittles, had it built by D4x4, cost him £60k, he's the guy who now builds these.....

Ah, Greeni - You are probably right as I know it was a D4x4 build. That makes perfect sense.
