Odd title, but I have an issue with the Speaker Evolution headlamps I bought recently. and before next thursday I need to get hold of 4 of the mentioned diodes, and sofar either myself or my Land Rover dealer cannot find those here in Switzerland. I have searched ebay, and can only find a few offers for those in USA or Hong Kong, which will take too long, and then they still are offered by 100 at the time (price is negligible, that's no issue, but only need 4).
Does anybody here have some of those around? I would be happy to pay for them and for speedy postage, if someone could put four of those little bits in an envelope and mail to me. In short, my SVX has front fogs installed (Hella Comet 550) which use 55W halogen bulbs. Installation fully legal, so wiring runs via 4 pin relay and switch, and there is a 5 pin relay which takes its signal from one of the SVX high beam to turn the fogs off in case I switch on high beam. So the front fogs work only together with either parking lights or low beam. That's the way it should be. Now when the standard main SVX headlamps which use 55/60W H4 bulbs were replaced by my LR dealer for the Speaker Evolution, we have a problem. All works fine with or without the front fogs switched on, but the problem appears when the front fogs are switched on and then you give a high beam signal, meaning you pull the high/low beam stalk toward you. Then, when you go back to low beam, the auxiliary high beam lamps on the SVX will remain on, and will not go off anymore until you switch everything off. The only explanation for this can be that the Speakers which have some electronics in them are causing this. (the standard SVX H4 headlamps obviously have no electronics at all). A weird situation, so I asked Tim from Mobilecentre for help, and he thinks that installing 4 of those 3A diodes IN5400 in the wires going to the high and the low beam of the Speakers might solve it. Neither me, nor Land Rover find any supplier here in Switzerland which offers those diodes... And I have appointment at LR for a 2nd attempt to install them next week thursday. So anyone can help me out here? The worst case alternative is that LR would install the Speakers, and take out the wire from the high beam which is used as sensor for the 5 pin relay to auto switch off the front fogs when high beam is selected. In that case there is no connection anymore between the front lights and the fogs, so it should work fine, but not fully legal.... Tks, Eric You never actually own a Defender. OK, little update. I in the meantime was able to order here in Switzerland 10 of those little buggars on line, Will keep posted if they solve the issue in the end. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Don't suppose you know where the high beam signal from the headlight is taken from do you for the isolation to the fogs. In theory it should be paralelled off the input to the high beam relay not the higher current input to the lights themselves and run to a seperate relay for the fogs to prevent confliction of circuitry. (Hope this makes sense I knew what I was trying to ask )
If not you could potentially fit yet another auxilliary relay as described above to isolate the fogs when high beam is selected. By separating the two circuits it is more work but the two different circuits shouldn't then 'conflict' with each other. Hopefully Tim's solution will come up trumps. If you have no joy and would like assistance with wiring diagrams etc. just drop me a pm. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! I have seen that the high beam signal to go back to the 5 pin relay which then turns of the fogs when high beam gets selected, is actually taken from the actual full power input at one of the lights itself. As stated if the diodes don't work move the tap off for the fogs from the 'full power' to the coil of the high beam relay itself, fit another auxiliary relay and run the fogs from that. It will seperate/isolate the two 'control and supply' aspects of the circuits themselves. The JW Speakers are I believe (don't have a diagram for them) quite complex and must have a voltage sensing circuit/voltage sensitive relays in as they are 'plug and play' and will automatically detect wether you are using 12v or 24v.
Just an idea? PM me if you don't have any joy.... If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Ok, that gives us two options now for LR to try out. I hope to have received the diodes before thursday so that the dealer can try that option, if not, will talk to him about your suggestion of a 3rd relay so that the signal for auto switch off the fogs in case of high beam can be rerouted. Let's see how that all goes. Will get back.
By the way, I could find nowhere the 3A diodes 1N5400, but could find and buy 3A 1N5401... The only difference in the specs are that the 5400 say tension 50V, while the 5401 says 100V. Hope that will not pose a problem You never actually own a Defender. Sorry Eric, only just seen this or I could have saved you some trouble. I have some of these in my extensive stash:
Click image to enlarge PM me if you end up without any and I'll pop you some in the post. I must say though, this does sound a little odd. I assumed that due to the military 'ruggedness' of the Speakers, that the switching electronics inside would not only be immune to external influences, but would be unlikely to radiate interference either. I suppose you could say that! I've been in the electronics business so long now I've learnt to 'collect' components for a rainy day! Pete |

OK, took a while, but all solved now
The diodes solution suggested by Tim did not work, the initially described problem remained the same. So those out again. Additionally the diodes indeed took away something like 0.7V tension, which when turning them on with the engine not running caused the Speakers to flicker. A bit more head scratching for LR, but in the end the solution was along the lines of what K9F suggested, meaning a 3rd relay to completely disconnect any link between the front fogs circuit and the Speaker headlights. Actually LR did go one step further, don't ask me for too many details or a drawing, but they told me that they ran the third relay via the negative electric circuit in order to kill the remotest chance for interference with the Speaker's built in electronics..... In any case, the set up is now fully in line with EU rules. The front fogs come on only with parking lights and with low beam, but automatically get cancelled when switching to high beam, and reverse... Under the hood, there is a neatly installed line up of 3 relays now, plus the fuse for the front fogs. The Speakers light quality indeed is a gem, basically the same light output, light color, and light spread as my wife's VW' HIDs. You never actually own a Defender. One more thing; after reading here so many comments about the headlight bezels in mild steel as installed by LR OEM equipment rusting away, I had also bought from Mobilecentre a set of the SS bezels. They were installed together with the Speakers, but checking the boxes tonight which now hold my original clear headlamps, LR also put the original bezels back in there.... And they are just immaculate, like brand new, not a rust speckle. My SVX is 4 years old with 60k km, so wonder if the UK climate is responsible for all those rusting bezels there I now understand my dealer's strange face when I asked them to install those SS bezels
Just went for a first quick ride in the dark with the Speakers on, and my son also commented that the light output is even better than the HID's on our VW You never actually own a Defender. Glad you finally got it working, and without adding unnecessary complexity to mask the root cause.
Regarding the bezels, I made exactly the same mistake. Thanks to some expert on here who said that the SVX had the same bezels as standard, I bought a SS set from Tim without checking first, only to find that they were identical to the originals. Something else for the For Sale section when I get round to it! Pete |
