Never rev mine over 3000 as I really don't find the need but that may just be my driving style

Why? A TDi will run much better without any exhaust restrictions -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Sorry, by TDi I mean any turbo-diesel. Hmm, that's odd, maybe you do need a remap then -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

er No!
I have a remap, not that (as I have said) I need it or use it much. As far as I am concerned I spent a huge amount of time getting it to run how I want it to run and without doubt removing the cat and replacing the exhaust for the one I have described has made it run the best it ever has since I drove it out of the showroom. I have wasted money on other mods but this one was worth it and has made the most difference to how it drives and performs. I am not saying it will suit everyone or their requirements but just that it has worked for me |

Normal driving for me is between 1500 and 2500..... But it is nice having the power for another 1500rpm when you need it.
Here is a video of mine this morning- not bad for 32 degrees C and the truck weighing approx 2850Kg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InmQYpDO9dE&feature=youtu.be I have straight through exhaust and remap from Alive. I do need a larger intercooler with the temps out here though. Glyn |

I fitted a decat pipe and a cherry bomb centre pipe yesterday and the difference was remarkable, engine is so much more responsive and the exhaust noise is minimal!

Based on a majority being positive about the decat I jumped to the dark side before Matt could take away my last doubts.
Installation is simple but i would recommend doing it on a lift and being with 2 people to reposition the cat studs while someone manipulates the tube under the car. Yes you will need to remove the bracket attached to the engine and yes the transverse chassis reinforcement (what do you call it) needs to go out as well as the prop shaft at the diff side needs to be disconnected. I made a couple of test runs to see immediate result of the decat. Long term consumption etc will show over time, I have a decent idea and data logged of the 110 with cat, it looks as also consumption will benefit but i want to drive a couple of tanks before making conclusions. I recorded my scangauge on video and drove the stretches in similar weather conditions with only 24h between them. 2 times for each gear, same startpoint etc time measured on video, “technique” of simply flooring it at startpoint. Some numbers Stretch 1500-3000rpm (both 4th and 5th gear) Flat: 16% faster Hill: 15% faster 1500-100km/h 6th gear Flat: 14% faster Hill: 8% faster False Flat Stretch 1000-3000 rpm 3rd: 29% faster 4th: 17% faster 5th: 9% faster That’s not bad for a "free" mod. Turbo picks up “instantly” from somewhere north of 1250rpm. So it delivers the power earlier and over a wider band, not a racer as no more power created over stock, just earlier. CHT runs about a bit lower with the decat and MAP values peak at the same +- 2550 revs but went from 223 up to 231. (whatever that means) EGR i saw no noticeable difference. Sound levels and booming inside without mid box and now decat are identical, I do not notice anything but the spool up-down of the turbo which is noticeable when listening for it. Put on the radio and you wont even hear it. Exhaust, is definitely more hot at the exit and cooler under bonnet. Exhaust smells as a diesel engine and not as some chemical plant as it used to do. Even if it is more toxic it doesn’t smell as toxic. But no smoke. Surging: no difference noticed. Putting it in feeling and words it transforms the 110. It doesn’t make it a sportscar but the engine feels alive. It reacts promptly and much less sluggish as with the cat. It also means that each hill you are at that point of just being able to maintain speed and losing speed I now have reserve. This reserve is not massive compared to the ease of acceleration but it is nice being able to keep the speed limits going uphill. In the lower gears it is explosive when flooring it. Now what would a remap do on top of this…. |

Glynn, thank you for your explanation. The Boy - why would you want the back pressure then? Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Excellent I survived surgery this morning but it's going to be a while before I can follow your example. I also have to get the emissions tested before and after for my son's project - still, it's another chance to get him under the car and doing something useful So here's the million Euro question - is the change in sound (including turbo) and exhaust smell so big that a LR dealer/TÜV tester would notice without looking for it? Yours opiately Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Matt,
sorry, but yes to both questions without mid box. and if the TUV guys have similar noses and ears as german shepherds, which i expect, you know what that means (well anyway you have to be 23 year old bulldog not to notice it) But i think you can get away with it with the middle box still installed as that one makes the big change in sound. Wish you a quick recovery! |

Aaah - silly me. Forgot about the mid-box
Yup - I guess it all goes on smell in the end. All my changes should be "stealth" mods, as far as possible... well, until I get the intercooler and turbo next year Tell someone you love them today because life is short. Pardon my ignorance but why does Germany have to have such silly laws? Don't get me wrong this country is hot on it's heels for these stupid laws but it all does seem a little bit OTT In my opinion. I always thought the objective behind most the laws is simply for safety reasons which I can understand. But a modified exhaust what difference is that going to make to anyone? Okay, maybe with one exception super loud noise but that's covered by law anyway which is sensible and can be measured in dB. But the whole modification issue in general really annoys me. When things have no compromise on safety and in some ways often improve safety what is the point. We're not sheep that all have to be the same... No Guts, No Glory.

Steve, I understand your sentiments but who exactly states whether a modification actually improves or has no compromise on safety? For example does fitting a winch make the vehicle more safe from a pedestrian perspective? Or if that winch is fitted by a complete 'biff' with no engineering or electrical experience is it safe for him to use? Some legislation isn't as bad as it first appears. I'm glad we don't have it and my examples were extreme ones but here's an extract from Nurburgring entry rules that may enlighten a little..... German cars For German cars, nothing changes other than better enforcement. It is already the case that you your car's TUV papers must show that all modifications were made with TUV-approved parts and that the safety of the installation has been approved by a TUV inspector. What will be happening in 2008 is that TUV inspectors and police will be making regular checks. You will be required to produce a TUV certificate which lists all the modifications made to the car. If you have unapproved modifications, you will not be allowed access and the police may prosecute. If you have unapproved parts on a German car, and do not have the correct papers, you should arrange for a TUV inspector to carry out a Einzelabnahme inspection which (if it passes) will then certify that the parts and fitting are safe. If you have parts with ABE (Allgemeine Betriebs Erlaubnis) or Teile Gutachten papers, then the inspector can do a simplified inspection looking purely at the installation. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Mal - I do agree with you. It just seems often or not to me that crucial things are often missed especially by the police such as defective tyre's but for a modification say of a blue light showing on a modified car from outside which is illegal. That would be a certainty to be sorted out. Even though both are illegal for very different reasons and both have a safety aspect to it but clearly one poses more risk than the other. The worst thing I see around OFTEN is defective headlights at night and that is very dangerous in my opinion when you are being blinded. Still No Guts, No Glory.
