My mot man says no problem . Most new diesel cars now have dpf filters , its the only way to get them to pass the eu emissions rules . I took one apart on a car last week , its only a ceramic honeycomb , tiny holes to catch the soot , only prob is when it gets wet it clogs up , thats why you have to boot it every now and then to clear it . Thats why its so restrictive and causing us new 2.2 drivers such a headache . Last edited by keith on 11th Oct 2012 9:29pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Under current MOT requirements for a compression ignition engine - no! A CI (diesel) engine is tested on smoke only - and this year for post 2008 the smoke limit has got lower, but still no requirement to have a DPF or CAT. Under European law, vehicle manufacturers must meet set emission standards when the vehicle is sold.... However once the vehicle is sold, the owner can do what they like as long as the vehicle still passes any in use tests for their country... Which in the UK is only the MOT test. I've no doubt at some point the UK government will try and pull us in line with some other European countries where vehicle mods are a no no.... But when we get to that point, I'd be more worried about other mods that people do! No more 2" lift kits etc. And If we get to that point, there will be ways around it.... Just need to be creative. The latter point they have been talking about for ages, and there was lots of scaremongering when the 2012 MOT regs came out, but the only change was a lower smoke limit. Sorry Ian, was not trying to suggest there was a problem or to put a dampner on what you are doing as I think it is only good news for us 2.2 owners etc but as you say there is a lot of scaremongering and hearsay re MOT's going forwards!!
Look forward to the release ASAP. Gas, Grass Or Ass - Nobody Rides For Free "UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. Russel, I didn't take it like that.... From my point of view its good that people ask questions, as if you are thinking it, so will other people... Japseroony - I think you are correct for petrol engined cars but not diesels as the regs refer to "vehicles that qualify for a full cat emissions test" having to have a cat fitted if one was standard. |

I think you will find that the new diesels are included in this category now as the new CATs have sensors on and are connected somehow to the ECU in the same way as the petrol enginesare etc and the CAT is now part of the MOT for both petrol and diesel - I stand to be corrected and would love some clarification on this anyone Gas, Grass Or Ass - Nobody Rides For Free "UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. Section 7.4 Exhaust Emissions - Compression Ignition only covers a smoke test.
Cat test emissions are only included for spark ignition engines. |

A lot of people do get confused when they read section 7.1 with regards to the exhaust system... Method of Inspection Item number 3: On vehicles that qualify for a full cat emissions test, check the presence of the catalytic converter. Reason for Rejection A catalytic converter missing where one was fitted as standard. However if you re-read the first bit - then look further into the regs - "The catalyst test is part of the MOT test for most spark ignition petrol engined vehicles with four or more wheels first used on and after 1 August 1992" It does not include Compression Ignition engines. Source - http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/index.htm The sensors are in the exhaust of most modern diesel to improve control - and normally only when a DPF is fitted (especially in case of a Defender). In the case of the DPF the ECU needs to see temperature, AFR, Pressure differential across the DPF etc. It makes no difference to the MOT regs. UPDATE –
After extensive road and rolling road testing… The first stage of tuning is our ‘IRB410’ conversion… This will provide just over 410nm at the flywheel. What does this mean at the wheels - more important than flywheel figures At the wheels (so after all gearing and frictional losses) you will see an increase in power of 12bhp and a 59Nm increase in torque. Speed Limiter Speed limiter removal also included if required. What about the DPF? Our IRB410 keeps soot generation within the capabilities of the DPF, so ‘regens’ will occur as per a standard vehicle. Cost Price is £599.99 + vat This is for the IRB410 conversion. No other modifications are required other than the new software. The second stage of tuning is already in progress… just over 460nm at the flywheel (and 150bhp). And there is a 3rd and 4th level… Modifications to the air intake and exhaust will be required…. Hi Ian, Can you please clarify this for me as I am a little confused, never been that good with English Is this 12BHP at the wheels or flywheel and 59Nm at the wheels or flywheel Cheers and well done Gas, Grass Or Ass - Nobody Rides For Free "UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. Have updated the post - is my confusing way of writing things... At the wheels you will see an increase in power of 12bhp and 59Nm in torque.
