2012 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 DCPU Santorini Black
Heated mirrors
Hi on the morning of the L2B run early start and slight frost I had to use the heated screen for the first time, but the mirrors fogged up and needed wiping a few times which was ok drivers side and as I had my daughter on near side duties but the near side would be a pain in the arse on my own !!!!
Do these elements actually work and can I wire them off the heated screen switch or is there a relay for it I can get to and piggy back off
Is the loading going to be to much ?
Also I don't know how long the screen stays on but will that be long enough to clear mirrors ? It's good to be back from the dark side

They do work well, and really help to stop mirrors fogging up.

You could take a feed off of the heated windscreen to switch a relay but I wouldn't take the feed directly. I'm not sure what power they are but wouldn't want to increase the circuit load of the heated windscreen personally.

Also, I to leave my heated mirrors on for a long period of time, much longer than the front heated windscreen stays on for so would want them wired in a different way.

Most of the heated mirror kits are fairly low draw around 1A per side so could be switched directly without the use of a relay.

@Phoenix - did they work ok in Nordkapp or did your side windows obscure the mirrors ?

I've been reading about the snow plough runs and they recommend you keep you car cold Shocked

I have them fitted and think the work really well.

I noticed when I lived in Scotland I would de-ice the mirrors and within 5-10mins they were frozen again, so great in my eyes Thumbs Up

I reckon that heated mirrors are much more worthwhile than the heated screen.

My heated mirrors are wired into a new dash switch and they stay on when its cold, could also wire then to come on with the rear demist - which is on most of the time.
Also noticed that the warm mirrors also dispel the rain / mist when normal driving.

bpman - mirrors worked well in Norway untill the side windows froze - at about -35, they were still clear but could not be seen through the 1/4 inch of ice on the inside. But the heating on your Tdci is better than the Td5s so it may keep the side windows clearer.

The MUD UK elements come with a relay, wires etc

Jake at Devon 4x4 did an excellent article on wirring through the mirror stalk and then through the hinge - lots of pics - I used it and it keeps the wires hidden.
I had a quick look on their web site but could not find it so if you email Jake I am sure he will point you to it - they sell the mud kits as well.

As boode says they worked well - though we never had the 1/4 inch of ice on the inside Shocked

The bit they where best for was in the tunnels. If your going E6 you'll be going through a lot of tunnels, as the air is a slightly different temperature in there almost as soon as you drive in your side mirrors will fog over totally. We learn't to turn the mirror heating elements on whenever we where approaching a tunnel to help stop them fogging over.

Simple but effective mod, definitely worth it Thumbs Up

In ordinary cars, heated mirrors are usually connected to the rear heated screen. Taking a feed of that via a relay would seem like a reasonable approach. The relay could even incorporate a timer if desired. Darren
