About 25 years ago I got a new exhaust at Kwik Sh*t in Colchester. When I picked it up, the guy informed me I had a serious cut on the inside of one of my tyres and asked me if I wanted him to fit a new one. Stupidly, I agreed. When I insisted on seeing the damaged tyre, there was a two inch slash half way up the inside wall, obviously made with a razor blade or similar.
We had a bit of an argument but as he had the car and I had to pick wifey up from the hospital, the Censored got away with it. Did all my own exhausts after that and always watch tyre fitters in the bay, even when they try to kick me out Evil or Very Mad Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

I have tested many different tyres in all type of conditions in the UK on many Defenders over the years and have found the General AT2 to do most things asked of them, they are snow/mountain rated but not an out and out snow or winter tyre.......they do most thiongs very well and are a tad better than the BFG AT as they are a softer compound.

An AT tyre will always be better than a MT tyre in the packed snow but maybe the MT in some deep snow a tad better.

Winter tyres are starting to be the way foward for most vehicles but untill we ALL have them fitted you are still going to struggle in traffic as you can only go as fast or as far as the vehicles stopped or stuck in front of you.

Yes winter tyres are great and I support there use but think a well driven Defender with a good set of All Terrain Tyres should do what most need, when it gets to much for your tyres you always have the option of Chains, which is the way I go if needed.

Here in Surrey with all the traffic it does not make much difference what tyres you have fitted as the roads get grid locked with half an inch of the white stuff, teaching people to drive in very slippery conditions would help IMHO.

We all have our own idear on what works for ME, go with what you feel most happy with.

Have been in the tyre trade for very many years and have found you can lead a horse to water BUT you can't make it drink.

The General AT2 is a tyre that we have been very happy with and going by my sales and the feedback from many customers backs it up.

The OP wants something for another country and I think needs to look to some of the Scandanavian countrys for info, as yet we are behind on these specialist winter/snow applications.

Need to start doing some homework on the more utility snow/winter tyres but the market will be very small in the UK untill rules and regs change, all Surrey Ambulance's have been fitted with winter/snow tyres for the last two years and we have quite a few small fleet owners going down the winter route.

Andy appreciate your feedback. Fully agree with your comments for UK application. Problem in Slovakia is that the winters do get really cold (requirement for a softer compound) and winter tyres are compulsory, hence the need for a set...

I have had nothing but trouble with KF. Always use smaller independents. Last time though I got a price for tyres from my local Indie garage and Watling Tyres came along in a van and fitted 5x BFG ATs and during the last 15k miles they are still perfectly balanced. Thumbs Up BM52

Are there any remould winter tyre types made? I know Insa Turbo have a pattern resembling current BFG AT.... Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

I also did some reading about safety. Quality remoulds seem to be as safe (or unsafe) as any other tyre. They are not the re-treads of 30 years ago. It has made me think Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

I have just purchased 5x BFG KM2's for next years arctic trip in January. I was reliably informed that they are as good as anything else to use up there - standfast proper studded snow tyres.

Maybe they are. Perhaps the new quieter design (which makes them less good on mud) will make them better on snow & ice. KM2s were designed for rock crawling sport, so may have good grip without the rubber warmed up by road use. KM2s look like aggressive ATs....
