Defender 2.2 Tuning/Remap from IRB developments! - UPDATE!!

IRB developments are pleased to announce we have now cracked Defender 2.2 Tuning!

After extensive testing, we will soon be able to offer the first stage of performance enhancements for the new 2.2 Defender.

After lots of ‘specialists’ have said that it is not possible, that no one has developed a tool, that we are still waiting…

Well, just because none of the main tuning tool manufacturers have managed to crack the software, it doesn’t mean that it is not possible! You sometimes just need to look for another way of doing it….

With our first stage of tuning, we are not looking at giving big increases in power and torque… But instead we have re-developed, enhanced and packaged a new ECU calibration that sets out to get rid of the poor drivability and performance of the 2.2 – hopefully solving the complaints made by owners.

This is not just a 'bit of fuel here, bit of boost there' type remap – with no proper testing structure….

We have carried out a driveability study, and made it our mission to fix all the problems highlighted during extensive rig, road and rolling road testing.

With all the enhancements, we have looked at the current engine set-up and made sure we stay within safe limits – this includes looking at DPF capabilities, the standard air intake setup, intercooling etc.

Progressing forward, we will be looking at yielding greater power and, more importantly, improved torque delivery. At the moment however, we are purely focusing on giving a safe and useable increase without any component changes.

The software change is carried out via OBD, so we do not need to open ECU’s. There will be no external signs that the vehicle has been modified, and nothing will flag up if plugged into by a main dealer.

So – when will it be available?

Very soon!!

However, before release to the general public we want to do some final evaluation testing – so are looking for volunteers who have ‘standard’ 2.2 Defenders (90 and 110).

There are terms and conditions to this – please pm or email me for details.

This is not a small undertaking, and has taken a huge investment in hardware and software!

We don’t just want to make the Defender drive as we think it should, we want it to drive as our customers think they should!

Much easy to test with an engine still in a car lol Thumbs Up

Although, it would make an interesting project putting it in my Series One.

Good on you!

At last a proven way of improving drivability on the open road and the rolling road.

How many other tuners have ever seen a set of rollers let alone used them!

We are not just talking about power runs either... 7 hours on the dyno looking at power and torque delivery - and not just in one gear! The joys of an Eddy Current Dyno.

All PM's will be replied to... have a few to do!

Fully agree its good to see a tuner using a dyno. I know both Ian and Pete from BAS use this one down in Bromsgrove because the dyno owner keeps all the specs and softweare current and changes it every 6 months in line with the upgrades to match new vehicles.

Ian, as you know my previous 2.4 was on the dyno there when Pete was doing the development so have no worries about my new 2.2 being used a test vehicle on the same dyno? Gas, Grass Or Ass - Nobody Rides For Free

"UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" ----is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" -----------is how far you take the fence with you.

Exactly....
The article that was in last months LRM (featuring me) is now well out of date as the rolling road as gone through two updates since then!

Russel, I will PM you with what I'm after Wink

We spent some more time on the dyno yesterday....

See below power curve.

The red line is a 100% standard 2.2, the green line is the ST1 2.2 calibration. Apart from adjustments to the calibration, there are no other changes to the vehicle.

The top curves are torque, the lower curves are power.

Whilst we are happy with the figures, we are still adjusting - and aim to is to bring the torque in at a lower RPM - so the graphs will change!

I'm not releasing all the figures - but the new ST1 calibration makes a genuine 59Nm at the wheels over the standard LR Calibration.

Without giving away too many secrets... the things that most people think they need to adjust, haven't even changed.
