2008 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
Winter tyres...
Looking to buy a set of new rims and winter tyres for my svx - any recommendation on which tyres to go for?

Are these winter tyres? Currently running BF Goodrich ATs but they are useless on snowy roads :blub:

Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2.

Those are winter tires which are offered by LR Switzerland as an option in the standard 235 85 16 Defender size on black modular steels. I have those (LT, not LT2 which is new for this year) for four years now and pretty happy with them.

Also Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx - I bought mine for that purpose and they were excellent in snow and ice last Winter (also studdable). If you've won the lottery then Nokian Hakkapeliitta have good reviews.
However, I have to admit if you're driving on slush-over-ice, nothing much will help you except foresight Whistle Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

None of the two are really winter tires. They may have the M+S marking, but that does not make them a winter tire, The latter are identified by the snow flake marking. I don't say that those two are not good in certain wintry conditions, but think makes a lot of sense to use real winter tires from Oct to March. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

It is not so much about winning the lottery, but while not sure about Germany, in many countries it is already mandatory to run winter tires in those months, and here in Switzerland (and believe also in Germany) it is not really mandatory yet, but if you would have an accident in the winter, it is possible that your insurance company will decline taking the liability if they deem that the accident could be due to inappropriate tires for the weather conditions. A bit of a blob, but better not to take a risk. When you run winter tires, your summer shoes don't wear, and a set of black Modulars does not cost the end of world either, and I can assure you, they do look good on a Defender, SVX et al... Thumbs Up
One more thing, when buying Nokians, only buy 4. No point to put them as spare because they are unidirectional. So you only would have 50% chance of having the proper spare on your back door in case you need it. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Looking at the Nokians I will probably go for them. A set of 4 will set me back around 600 eur delivered so not really a lottery breaker. A set of black modulars in my garage already available ;)

Now, I used to have a 530 BMW and I ran it on winters and the difference they made was a revelation. Whereas previously I couldn't even get up my drive I never got stuck anywhere with the winters. Like I said they were brilliant and I would recommend them to anybody particularly a rwd car like a beemer or Merc.
Moving on though and I now have my 110 and have only run it on the standard Continentals but it has been absolutely fantastic in the snow so given we have these brilliant machines on relatively aggressive rubber in the first place do we really need special tyres? I know the winters' composition allow them to work at lower temps etc etc but are they necessary?

That is like discussing colors and taste.... We never will find a common viewpoint on that. I think it makes a lot of sense and gives peace of mind in case of..........

I know one thing, my Nokians/modulars go in the back of the 110 to my local LR dealer on on October 19, and I will come back with the summer wheels in the back to clean them and store them at home until April 2013 Thumbs Up

Oh, that is right, on Oct 19 I also asked my dealer to replace my main headlights for the JW Speaker Evolution which I have on order from Mobilecentre Whistle . Tim, pls make sure they arrive in time here Smile You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I agree with comments made but depends what your idea of a winter tyre really is. In snow and ice I think a more road tread is better like the GG TR's than my KM2's BUT I personally don't think it a good idea really to travel in such weather full stop (In this country at least) I have my KM2's mainly for their MTR quality's and not for snow and ice so it suits me as an all year round tyre personally. But in performance in snow and ice I'd actually feel safer driving with the General Grabbers due to the tread as the KM2's have a more block like tread and will slide about as they are designed to dig into soft mud. With this in mind as far as BFG's go your probably better of with your ATR's as a tread. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I,m supprised you find BFG ATs to be so poor in snow i have found them to be very good certainly much better than the factory fit Grabbers. BFG ATs now have snowflake rating so can be used in Europe in winter without worrying about insurance problems. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Been a good boy and switched between Winter/Summer tyres/wheels on all 3 cars since 18 years - if I had my way it would be compulsory in Germany too (there are idiots everywhere) - fortunately we get plenty of snow in Bavaria and the standard of living is high = folks can afford tyres Thumbs Up

Incidentally, I also believe TREAD should be compulsory on all car tyres in the UK - especially hire-cars Evil or Very Mad

Last Winter was my first with the Defender and I was a bit shocked the first time I tried to brake on ice using the stock LR Contis (marked M+S for comedy value)... I had to choose between buying a second set of wheels and Winter tyres (very expensive if I chose nice wheels and the Nokians) or going for good Winter/all-rounders. The Maxxs had very good reviews for Winter use and I've been very happy as the compound is quite soft but they've barely worn this Summer and are fairly quiet Thumbs Up

*Edit* Winter tyres (at least M+S) are compulsory here since 2011 (60 Euro fine and no insurance). Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...
