Have to agree with Brendan about the clatter board. On holiday in Scotland we had to go and get supplies and ended up in a Co-Op in Dunfermaline, went under the clatter board with inches to spare, spotted a parking space in the sort of underground carpark next to a pillar, swung in and CRUNCH! Granted the Brownchurch roofracks are pretty heavy duty, being wedged under a huge cast iron downpipe elbow gave it a bit of grief! Worst bit was that it had forced the roof down on the front corner and I couldn't open the drivers door.
I did provide a fair amount of amusement in the campsite later that day with a fencing stake out of the hedge, bottle jack and getting the family to bounce up and down on the bumper to ease the roofrack up off the front of the roof ![]() |

Note on the measuring idea
take in account the entrance ramps and floor ramps in multi level underground parkings, the longer your wheelbase the more you will "lift" your height once the front wheels are back on level ground. Its like bellying out on a crest but up side down. I once got wedged between the ceiling causing a multiple km long jam in the center of Gent on a saturday afternoon as the only way out was reversing. Also for the other cars behind me as no place for U turns . ![]() Barrier said 1.9m, my pickup (with hardtop) was lower than 1.8 ..... on level ground. Police had to intervene to organize the chaos outside, i got into a big discussion and blame with threatening intervention costs etc till I told them to start the discussion over again once i drove out without hitting their 1.9m barrier. ![]() ![]() |

I have heard of above too..... Where they make a carpark, then over a period of 20-30 years it gets re-surfaced several times and don't change the max height board which by then can be about 20-30cm out.

There is (or used to be) an indoor car park (like a single floor multi-story) in Reading where I took my Disco 2 once. My Disco runs on 265/75s and has full length roof bars so is a little taller than standard, but I know exactly how tall it is.
The height restriction at the entrance and the clatter board both told me I had a minimum of 6" clearance, so in I went, only to find that ventilation ducts had been fitted all over the place reducing the headroom by about 15" wherever they ran. I had to pick my way very, very carefully round the car park, but fortunately could both park and get out afterwards (although I did for a while think I would have to use the entrance ramp to get out). I haven't been back since. There is also a car park round here where I know that the clatter board is some 4" higher than the roof beams over the exit barrier. |

It's allmost tempting to go the "Cat's Whiskers" approach if you have to frequent height restriction problems. Put a cb type ariel on the front trimmed to the maximum height, even better if you can see the top from the drivers seat. Biggest problem is the lack of an escape route at a lot of these barrier points, I did cause a little mayhem in Gloucester one afternoon with a high top Transit van, had a complete senior moment and ended up on a slip ramp to a multi storey carpark

I always chuckle to myself when I see the look on Mrs FCX's face when the CB aerial hits overhead signs etc

I've discovered that my ariel on top of the roof rack is a shade over 4m, well that's the height of one of the petrol station canopies in town

My car park is advertised as 2m high and I can get in but it is CLOSE. There are some air conditioning ducts suspended from the ceiling and I have to drive between the hinges to get in. I also tend to keep more than half a tank of diesel in it in order to keep some weight over the rear.

Thanks for all the replies - I have just looked at the car park and its 1.98m not 1.8m!
Do you think its possible to get it that low? I appreciate the comments re getting 2nd car - but I already have a 2nd car which is a 2 seater softtop but I don't want the dogs in there hence the why I bought the Defender, now all I get is the other half bleating on about selling it for something more practical (read boring!) HELP! |

David, same as what I said above for my office car park. If you need to use a public underground car park in the center here with the Defender, Parking Rive is officially upto 2.05m high. I use it often saturdays, and all works well with a 110, but DON'T go lower than -5 level, as the two lowest parking levels have gradually less and less height!!!! You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

If the standard Car Aerial, fully extended, on my 90 clears the clatter board then I have never had a problem. LANDYWATCH

Same here, I believe that is then something like 2.06 meter high or even a bit more. So at least 3 or 4 cm higher than the highest point at the rear of my 110 You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I have a 2" drop and measure 1.97m with standard tyres unladen (110SW). I drive mostly on roads and use German car parks. Vehicle looks pretty standard and handles very well (for a bathtub). *Edit" - meant 2" drop (i.e. 5 cm) - can't convert from Euromoney anymore ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
