The stock oil gets very thick at low temps (below about 10°C anyway) and makes gear selection a bar steward until the 'box has warmed up. I'm about to swap mine out for some Evo1 (equivalent) so I don't have to double-declutch into second gear

MTF94 should be used which is very thin. Anything too thick and you'll get problems with selection.
These boxes don't like getting too hot either, as they can do on the D2 with all that foam/plastic soundproofing around it and the engine. Some farmers find that the boxes won't come out of 5th easily when running up the M5 slip roads - Usually with 5 tonnes of livestock on the back. That's due to heat. |

Thanks for the replies - I'm going to wait till I get the EVO 1 in the box, I checked the selector - all seems tight & fine.
To be fair I haven't really been on a run with it recently (less than 6 miles) & having just bought the truck I've no idea what's in the box at the mo so fingers crossed |

It can be that either some DIYer got their oil choice from a mate at the pub, or it was taken to a 'Specialist' who hasn't moved on from the 1990's. Very common I'm afraid.

I bought an 06 110 from the local dealer last year with only 13k on the clock and it had the same issue, the engineer drove it and said the gate was blocking the gears and they put a whole new box in on extended warranty.
That said it is back again as it was dripping oil, it appearsthey are going to have to replace the oil seal between the gearbox and transfer case, thank heavens I decided to extend the warranty again a few months ago. |

Just a quick update - had a good look today, decided to bleed the clutch - found some air in the system bleed through some fresh fluid & all seems ok
Just goes to show that often it's something simple |

Great news, now you just need to change the clutch springs, as do I

I've been having the same symptoms as the OP with the gearbox on my 2002 TD5 CSW, I too have ordered some Evo 1 oil for mechanical sympathys sake.
I've seen in another thread that air in the clutch can cause these problems and one of the remedies is to leave the clutch pedal partially depressed over night to allow the system to 'self bleed'. I tried this last night and gear selection this morning from cold was much improved. I'm going to swap the gearbox oil this weekend, however, driving has become a lot less stressful. Thank you Defender2, you are already saving me money and putting my mind at ease! |

Hi Folks, 1st time replied on here.
Had same problem for quite a while and tried differing methods that failed to cure it, final time was stuck in 5th approaching roundabout, quite scary. friend had a look and suggested adjusting clutch pedal (I had been told by at least two people that it is not adjustable) he'd had a look and the two locking nuts had slowly worked their way loose, once tightened up correctly all is fine. Hope that helps. Regards Dennis. |

Having a slight issue with my gears also,
When going from second to third it seems vague or loose or something, that is when going up to third I have to move the gear lever around a bit from side to side to find the gear,. Is there some kind of self centring spring on the lever that can go weak ? |

Yes there is a bias spring on the bottom of the stick/top of box that you can adjust, to align lever, so that it is straight forward to third, back to fourth.

So it's just an adjustment and probably not a worn spring ?
