WTD TD5 15p engine (Now got one thanks)
I know items long shot but after a head failure I am going to replace my engine so I am after a replacement, I have a couple of options but just thought I would check if anyone had one FS.

Cheers, Jason.

Low mileage but not sure if it's a 10 of 15p?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/landrover-discov...3ccad239b2

Or totally reconditioned for a ton more?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Td5-engine-15p-T...25758417e5

56K with 12 months warranty?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-DISCO...2ec1e08453

If you're keeping the vehicle and for peace of mind I personally would lean towards the total recondition.... Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Cheers, I had seen them but the recon one looks a bit suspect to me with its painted rocker cover, covered for the photo.

Not sure I would want the one thrown in the back of the lorry...

Equicar have a couple and I can see where they have come from, and how they ended their life's after all a engine running for 10 minutes upside down may look fine but won't be.

Me neither but for £300 less and 15k miles more on the engine (on the third choice) you get one as mentioned with a 12 month warranty!

Or choice 2....You get a totally reconditioned one (no warranty mentioned) for a ton more?

The marketplace obviously requires close scrutiny as there doesn't appear to be much difference in price at times between a second hand engine with warranty and one that appears to be reconditioned with no warranty mention. I would ask a few questions to see exactly how good the warranty was and how it would stand up with regards a potential claim, if possible get it backed up in writing. If you're retaining the vehicle surely a good warrantied engine would be best suited even if you have to 'shell out' a little more?

Good luck in your quest! Let us know how you get on! Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Good advice on checking the warranty.

Have you thought about just replacing the head? The rest of these engines are very reliable, I know the head replacement after fitting will probably cost as much as an eBay engine but you will be fitting a much better head which has had the known weak points improved ( thicker material around injectors ) What you want is a Spanish made AMC head. I went this route and it really is a nicely made casting.

You then know exactly what you have, you could just be buying another weak head as it seems to effect rather a lot of them.

Just thought it was worth a mention.

I think that's the big issue most warranties are not worth the paper, plus they don't cover your time and effort of fitting, So you fit it change the filters oil, etc run it up and have an issue best case they say no problem just return it for a refund....

I have a lead on a promising sounding engine so will update when it's sorted and the deal is done.

Steve,

That's my big problem, and one I have been mulling over since it happened, the cost of the AMC head is £1,250.00 then it's £150.00 for the gaskets bolts etc so we are at £1,400.00. Then I would have to do the job which I could either pay for or do it myself. To be honest it's not a job I fancy doing myself so it would be another £380 for fitting plus oil etc. so lets say £2k all in.

I have a couple of options for replacement engines which come in between £1,500.00 and £1,700.00 both <40k on them and both known good. My truck has done 100k and I suspect the clutch does not have a lot of life left in it so an engine out would be a chance to sort that. So again looking at the figures lets say £1,600.00 for the engine £380.00 for the clutch and flywheel £100 for filters, oil, fluids etc and I am at the £2.1k mark again, but have done my clutch I also have a spare td5 engine and bits which I should get £500 for bringing the cost down to £1,600.00.

If I then took £600 from the above for a clutch change then I am at £1k for an engine change.

OK I take the risk of it happening again but this seems to be around 100k they go so In theroy i have 60k of running which for me is about six years.

Not an easy choice...

please forgive my ignorance but would it be worth contacting Pete at BAS to see if there's anything coming up following a 3.2 ltr upgrade?

Well thanks to Marcus mentioning it to Ian at IRB that I was in need of a new engine and deal has been done and I now have a replacement engine. Smile

Just the small job of fitting it now!! I was reading the instructions last night and it seems fairly straight forward, empty the fluids, remove the rads, unplug the looms and fuel, unbolt from the gearbox/engine and lift out.... Simple!!

Will do Jim, I've borrowed a rovercom to sort out the codes.

Hopefully the rain will stop this year and I can get the job done.
