The next photo will probably just be a bit cleaner, or and with some additional insulation. Jason. |

Well with a help from a few friends (7) the replacement engine was fitted yesterday, Clearly it didn't need this many but with the promise of a free breakfast and lunch there were plenty of willing helpers. This group fix it type thing is actually great fun, lots of banter and shared knowledge and learning, jobs just get done quickly and the time goes quickly.
With a bit of pushing and shoving it slotted home nicely and bolted up well, by lunch time we had the engine back in on the mounts and the loom back in. I think threading the loom is one of the more complicated jobs, fairly easy if you know what you are doing but potential to thread it the wrong way which we did!! Fortunately one of the group had a TD5 so we were able to double check things. Curry and cake were followed by the installation of the rad pack connection of the hoses, a check to see we hadn't missed anything, followed by the addition of 65% mix antifreeze and the oil. Then a check for leaks revealed none so it was time to reconnect the battery and cross our fingers. Purge cycle started, and a further check for diesel leaks whilst the system was under pressure nothing found so only one thing left to do (well a few things left but one before starting) I had decided not to change the injector codes before we had tested the engine ran as I knew they would run with the wrong codes and I didn't want to add any other fault possibilities before we knew it ran. So it was time to turn the key and crank her over, well almost it was when Steve had managed figure out his camera!! Ignition on and key turned, the engine hummed into life on the first turn. We ran it for a short time and then turned her off in order to check for leaks and set the injector codes, injector codes changed and it was time to start her up again. It sounded nice and ran well, checked that she engaged gear and moved all good, Neil then checked for faults and noticed that the voltage was only 12.3v. Voltage checked at the alternator and nothing, clearly we should have been getting at least 12.3v. We checked for continuity but nothing. On close inspection the multiplug on the back of the alternator was not connected, this was clearly and issue but we still should have been seeing voltage. When I had started to look into moving the ECU that the charging wire came from the loom into the back of the mega fuse pack before going to the batteries. We tested the wire and the fuses but nothing so I checked the battery side and got voltage, clearly the wire had developed a fault during the replacement process. I quickly made another wire up and we fitted it externally to test cranking the engine the battery light went out and we got 14.3v. Time was pressing on so that's where we left it, I need to make up and thread the replacement wire refit the turbo shield acoustic cover front grill and bumper and then we are done. Then time to give it a good shakedown test before taking it off the road agian to finish prep for Norway. Jason. |
