HMRC/VOSA/Police check
Got pulled in for a HMRC/VOSA/police check this afternoon about 100 metres away from where I was going.

Dipped for red diesel and found it was clear Thumbs Up

VOSA checked indicators, brake lights and tyres. Only comment one rear brake disc slightly rusty and slightly scored but brakes was working ok. Thumbs Up

Vehicle was taxed, MOT and insured, driving licence was clean so Thumbs Up

Thought there was a lot of police/PCSO to man this particular check point, apart from that everything was done politely and quickly.

If it helps keep a few dodgy drivers off the road I do not object. Would be interesting to know percentage of actual 'hits' on dodgy drivers compared to the legal drivers.

I must admit I quite welcome this sort of action as opposed to sitting waiting for speeders and other soft targets. A large physical prescence I feel is more of a message to those that can't be asked to comply by the rules like the rest of us. If you can't afford to put your motor on the road legally then stop buying your cans of lager and bottles of cider, stop smoking packets of fags at, what are they about £7 for 20 Buying a scratchcard every day would more than pay for my insurance. If the car is a necessity then the scroats have to go without, like the rest of us to make sure we do things properly.

A woman brought her big old Volvo into the local tyre place at the weekend. They told her it'd be £54.50 each for 2 front tyres. Oooh, she said, I can only afford to get one done this week, the other'll have to wait. She then paid cash. I felt pretty sorry for her, obviously not well off. Until that is, she stepped outside, whipped out a pack of fags and lit up Rolling Eyes Priorities eh...

Police, HMRC etc are actively targeting light commercial vehicles in Cheshire for stolen metal and red diesel. I am more than willing to delay my journey a bit if there action / check points takes a few (steriotypical) white transits (you know what type I am thinking of) off the roads, as we have far too many of them around here. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper

If I were there I would fully support it...... BUT, what are they doing about it?... Is it the usual 'This is the warning, don't do it again' or are they actually taking action of confiscating vehicles and crushing them?

Is there any way of reporting vehicles with defective tyres?

I know of one sign written white van where the nearside front tyre is bald, i.e. down on to the 1.6mm wear bar. The front offside tyre may or may not be legal.

So there are a dob a drug dealer schemes, and it is socially acceptable to report a drink driver.

Now is it socially acceptable to report a vehicle with obvious defects? How is it done

In the case I am referring to the driver (an employee) would be liable for the points and fine, not sure if the company could be held legally responsible. One of the company owners drives a Ferarri so they should be able to afford new tyres.

There was a check point on the M5 a week ago when I stopped for a stretch of the legs and a burger and there were about 6 vans and cars with stickers that said 'CONFISCATED - NO INSURANCE' on their windscreens... Thumbs Up

There was also a lorry with a wheel clamp on in the Police parking area, so assume that it was to do with his tacho hours?

The company could be liable if they are 'causing' the vehicle to be driven with defective tyres i.e. if they are refusing to replace the tyre.

I'd suggest getting the phone number of your local Traffic police as the cops there are more likely to be proactive in catching him. The typical cop on the beat probably wont have the time to look at it as they will be catching up on the previous days crimes.

Until a fatal RTC then corporate manslaughter kicks in and boy that is a can of worms .The justice system is waiting for the first proper lamb and it's only a matter of time I'm afraid I for one do not want to be in that line.

Difficult one as the employee is liable for using the vehicle. If he refuses he'd probably loose his job but better than his licence or worst case his life or someone else's.

Employer commits the offence of Cause or Permit under the Use, Cause, Permit Trafic Regs. Driver gets reported AND employer and both could be fined with points etc. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top
