Got some more done today (no pics) and have finally given up on fitting the SE wheel carrier.

Having now got the correct wheel carrier for the 90 with the correct length arms the thing still does not fit Big Cry
Local body shop modified the bottom body bracket so it would fit correctly - so far so good.
Put the bracket on the door and put the main carrier on to position the top body bracket. After three of us spending a good couple of hours trying to get it to fit we failed.

The door bracket is half an inch to low and to drill the door would mean that new crush tubes are needed etc. The body shop said it would not be a good idea to drill new holes in the door as they would be way too close to the existing mounts and would probably give way. The bracket can't be drilled as the holes are right at the bottom.

We then thought about plating the door but before starting we held the mount in the correct position to at least see if the top body bracket would fit. It would if the centre door hinge was removed Big Cry

It is destined for the skip Rolling with laughter

Fitted all the remaining insulation in the front and started making up new looms for the extra instruments.
Invested in some proper ratchet crimpers from Polevolt, making connections up is now a pleasure Thumbs Up

Might as well be Steve, it would probably fit on a cart Rolling with laughter

Safari Equip. They must have sold hundreds of the things so I (and quite a few others) can't work out why it will not fit on the my TD5.

If it did fit the spare wheel would sit so low that I think it would be useless, the bottom of the tyre would in line with the centre of the rear crossmember and I am guessing the nato hitch would have to be removed.

I can't justify the cost of a full chassis mount version on this vehicle so it looks like the spare will have to stay in the back or I will just have to put the original LR door mount back on.

An update on progress, no pictures - you will find out why later Big Cry

All paintwork sorted and bits bolted back on.

Duff modular wheels replaced by Craddocks and tyres swapped over. First class service from Craddocks Thumbs Up

First Four modified winch bumper fitted and TDS 9.5 winch fitted and plumbed in.

Turbo hoses changed for silicon ones, the old rubber ones were shot.

Mud centre panel fitted to the 2002 type radio housing and clock, volt meter and boost gauge fitted. Boost still not plumbed at the gauge end as myself and the indy, where it currently is, still can't work out how the pressure pipe fits on the back of the VDO gauge.

Given up on the spare wheel carrier, life is to short and I have far better things to do Laughing

Spare wheel is going to live in the back but I wanted the ability to carry something in the back other than a spare wheel.

Solution was found with a lot of help from Peter at First Four, a set of Mantec 110 rear wheel arch cages and shelves - they will fit Thumbs Up Cages will give enough height to allow the spare wheel to live under the shelves and combined with the dog guard will give a good storage/load area. Not seen them yet as Peter delivered them to the indy where the 90 currently is, the intention was to fit them this weekend but ........

Sent the 90 in to have the injector seals changed, the state of the old ones can be seen here

http://defender2.net/forum/topic15669.html

Intention was to collect the 90 tomorrow, fit the cages etc and finish it off.
Then came the email at lunchtime Shocked

They were running the 90 this morning and there was still the smoke problem.
The Indy had some extra mechanics in helping with some other work and they asked their opinion as to what the problem may be - diagnostics showed no problem. One of them was suspicious that it was turbo related and removed the front of the turbo to investigate and all became clear. On revving the engine the turbo was not spooling up correctly, there was a lag of a few seconds. Can't tell you the exact problem but it sounds like the bearings have expired and when the turbo eventually decided to spool it resulted in the blue/grey smoke.

After much debate it was decided to fit a new turbo rather than get the old one fixed - it will be delivered to the indy on Monday.

Expensive bill on the way but I am glad they found the turbo problem, I would not have fancied it expiring in the middle of Salisbury Plain !

There is light at the tunnel and I will post pictures of the finished article when it returns next week Thumbs Up

Going down the pub now whilst I can still afford a pint Rolling with laughter

A broken turbo on a TD5 is the best time to upgrade! Chop it in for a VNT

Did think about that but as it is going to be used mainly offroad I am not sure I would get the true benefit.

If the Puma throws its turbo then a VNT is a no brainer Thumbs Up

Almost finished Thumbs Up

Centre dash modified with a Mud plate. Clock moved from main console to allow rev counter to be fitted plus volt and boost gauges added.

Mantec cages and shelf added, spare wheel lives under the shelf. Small mods needed to get them to fit - they are for a 110, had to shorten the side cages by about 1.5" to allow them to fit with the dog guard (top is not fitted in the pictures). They will fit into a 90 without a dog guard without any mods.

Thanks Steve Thumbs Up

Not sure about the 25th, my relatives are here from the US until Dec 15th so I am organising things around them at the moment Neutral

Should have plumbed the boost gauge today having got all the correct bits now from a local pneumatic parts supplier but frost bite got me before I could finish Laughing

Looking good now Bob! Although I thought it was quite nice to begin with! It does look a lot more purposeful now though. Storage cages look really neat too and should stop things rattling around when you're in the rough stuff! Thumbs Up 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green
