Defender 07 XS diesel - gearbox and clutch conundrum
I've gone through most of the posts about the gearbox but I have a confusing set of symptoms on my wife's 07 plate with 28k miles.

1. first thing in the morning the clutch pedal goes down easily, but needs quite a lot of pressure. On repeating the pedal down action (pumping), it gets stiffer and slower, like stirring treacle.

2. gear selection seems to be difficult and I have to push through the gate. It feels as if the syncromesh cones are doing a lot of the work. I seem to recall the box being much much easier.

3. sometimes the gearbox 'growls' or 'miaows' when I change gear.

4. when well warmed up (say 30 mins driving), gear selection of 1, 2, R is almost impossible unless I stop the engine and select, then restart.


The vehicle was fully serviced for 3 years by Matfords Exeter in 2008, 2009, 2010, till the end of warranty.

In early 2012, it was serviced fully (inc gearbox and transfer box oils) and with a new clutch master cylinder at a known LR specialist in Taunton, in an attempt to sort out the gearbox reluctance to engage. Minor improvement, but back to its old difficulties now.


I can't separate the symptoms well enough in my mind to identify either

a clutch problem, eg. air in system or bad slave cylinder

or

a gearbox problem.


I am not aware of any recalls on the box or clutch having been performed (we have the vehicle since new, and I have had LRs from Matfords for years and years).


Any suiggestions please as to how I can identify any more specific symptoms to reveal or separate the problems (there may be one or more issues, unfortunately).

Seems there is air in the circuit.

search under "clutch" and you will find all info regarding all clutch issues since 2007. Since 2007 LR uprated to its 4th friction plate version. Puma 110" SW

OK, I'll do some more homework on this revised clutch.

Between changes the engine does not rev up unless my R foot tells it to. Smile


Though that leads to another observation, derived from running around in the snow and ice. If I take my foot off the accelerator quickly, the revs stay up for about 3/4 of a second, then drop. I'd assumed this was part of the emissions mapping, as LR Exeter told me they would not re-map to make the revs drop immediately.


The vehicle has not been without problems under warranty: 2 computers, then a complete re-wire and new looms at 18k miles. But I've had LRs in the UK and Middle East for over 37 years, so properly addicted....

I had a similar problem with a Nissan 200SX years ago that was similar.

After driving for about 50 miles, I had to stop and release the pressure of the clutch hydralics but unscrewing the bleed valve.

It turned out to be a dodgy slave cylinder that when I released the clutch pedal, it wouldn't release the pressure, so each press of the pedal put extra pressure in the system. If left overnight, it would eventually release the pressure. Craig Rogers

Try changing gear without using clutch, match the revs to speed that should indicate if the box is ok, then try changing gear without fully decompressing clutch peddle, and try putting it in gear then push your foot right to the floor on the clutch and see if it try's moving Smile 90 Puma HT

Can't really pass on much advice, but other than checking master, slave and fluid (don't think you mentioned clutch fluid flush through).

I would consider dropping an email or giving the guys at Ashcroft Transmissions a call and explain the symptoms- they were more than helpfull and can normally tell you exactly where the fault is from a simple discription.

progress is being made. I'll fill in the details in due course. AShcroft transmission fluid is due next week, asa first stage.
