Did it with a small choci block connector, took no time at all and now get a lovely 10-13 metre range (ran the new cable just up into roof lining). Perfect.
Thanks for the tip. |

I'm trying to do this on my 11 plate 110 XS puma but don't have the orange and grey wire. In approximately the same place I have a plain piece of braided wire with no plastic shielding which goes into the loom. Could it be that one?
![]() Click image to enlarge I did post this on another thread but don't think anyone is still watching it! |

No it's not that one, it's orange with a grey trace on the Td5's, maybe a different colour on later ones? The giveaway though is that it's a short length (about 4-5") coming from one of the connectors and going nowhere - with an open end, that's the one to extend.

In that case I don't have one, all wires are firmly in the loom...

There must be one in there somewhere, it wouldn't work at all without it, it might be taped into the loom? you might need to unbind the loom wrapping a little bit from that end.

To be honest I don't think I'll bother, it works as it is, just thought I could gain a little distance as it won't open at all if I'm on the nearside, I have to get within about 6 feet of the off side. It's still better than using the key

Might be worth checking the battery in the key fob?
Something I only found out yesterday was that if the indicator flash on unlock stops working, that's a signal that the fob battery is failing. |

Thanks, but that I did know, It's quite near the beginning of the quick start manual..as it happens I changed it quite recently so I don't think it's a battery problem..although I have had those batteries flat from new so I could try another one!

Sometimes a long operating range can be a dodgy thing , for example if your out of site of defender and push button by mistake or kids playing with your keys etc then your defender is sitting unlocked without you knowing it
shame that they dont relock after 30 secs if door isnt openned as the later rover cars do but then it can be a good thing as it could allow you you to check its locked from inside your house ! |

One of the settings on the 10AS is for "relock" and can be set if you have a diagnostic tool, Nanocom etc.
The only problem with "relock" is that it ignores opening of doors, you have to turn the ignition on to stop it from re-locking, so if you unlock, open a door and put your keys down while you rummage around for what you unlocked it for, then shut the door - keys locked in car ![]() Don't ask me how I know ![]() |

Sorted mine in 15mins the other night.
Chock block and a spare bit of insulated wire (in the "that'll be handy one day" section of the garage). Mine is now about 15m range. Interesting point about accidental unlocking while walking away. I installed the extension up behind the B pillar cover, but I guess you could play with the range by only taking the extension up to dash height - in reality 5 metres would be plenty and still 10x what I had before! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My first job involved driving from Southampton to Wick in a 300TDI (twice) The experience of 3000 miles in a Defender has never left me (for many reasons!) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Same here - I was all set to give up and then I found this http://defender90xs.blogspot.com/2014/11/r...nsion.html My 2010 Puma has the same setup - white wire hanging loose behind the clock. I found it by accident while refitting the stereo and thought I'd disconnected something - everything still worked so I just forgot about it ![]() I've extended it up the A-pillar anyway but the range is still very 'iffy'. If I'm parked same place in the drive, sometimes it works from 30ft away and other times (ok, most of the time) I'm practically standing at the door before it'll work ![]() Andy...
