The aftermarket MAF usually has a resistor based sensor which although functions at a constant flow, doesn't respond very quickly to changes in airflow and causes hesitation and a slow pickup. We also sell the VDO unit which is a hot film sensor type, the same as the genuine LR unit and gives identical performance and flow readings to the LR unit.
There are MAF cleaning solutions on the market to clean any deposits off from running oiled filters but I haven't tried any myself to know how effective they are.

I didnt realise i had a problem until i read this thread Very Happy
I hadn't realised that the performance of my 110 had slowly degraded, but reading this thread showed that my engine was showing some of the symtoms that have been mentioned, flat spot when cold etc.
Bought a new siemens MAF sensor and i am now enjoying a smoother more powerfull engine Thumbs Up

I agree! I reckon i know my 110 pretty well but i suppose if the performance slowly degrades you dont notice Confused

My MAF sensor is completely dead (i.e. zero airflow measured) - has been for ages. Below 2000 rpm all is excellent, but it seems to hit a ceiling when it gets to about 2200 prm if any torque is required (will spin up in 2nd & 3rd on the flat, if I can wait that long!).

Are these symptoms that are caused by a dead MAF sensor?

The trouble is that I average 33mpg easily, without driving too slowly either. I suppose that I could only connect it up at weekends...

Yep I'd put money on !

Obviously your MAF is dead, the symptoms you mention are all linked to it. I'd change it immediately. Should only help your fuel consumption as the engine wil be working more efficiently again. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top

New VDO MAF fitted - goes like poo off a spade (everything being relative). No longer a ceiling at 2200 rpm. And the nanocom gets sensible airflow readings.

The LR literature states that the MAF output is used for EGR operation - nothing about fuelling. There are many threads on various forums debating what the MAF output is used for. For me, it is now beyond doubt that there is a possibility that the MAF may contribute to fuelling.
