Cleaning Chequer Plate
I have cheque plate on the bonnet and wings. Always said I would not bother but was persuaded in to it in the end to aid getting to storage on the roof rack when camping. It's now been on for the past three years, it's the anodised plate but is starting to look a bit grubby. I have pressure washed it and used brushes of various stiffness but can't get the black grime off around the raised chequer bits.

Any suggestions on what to use be it chemical or mechanical to clean up the plate without scratching or damaging the anodising ? 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top

I've heard that pan cleaning sponges (the slightly abrasive plastic ones, so they won't actually scratch the ali, not like the wire wool type stuff) work well.

Don't know what chemical to use though. maybe jif? (or cif, if you've got a lithp Laughing )

When I gave mine a bit of a clean to spray it black I used some kitchen surface cleaner, to the eye it did the job very well, needed a bit of work with a decent stiff bristled brush to work it into all the nooks and crannies though!

I uesd to have a series two fire appliance which had quite a bit of chequer plate on it. When I spoke to folks at shows with full size fire engines, quite a few of them recommended using 'brown sauce' (yes really) as a cleaning agent!

This is for untreated chequer plate of course, and annodized stuff may react in a different way. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Someone on here a while back said he used wheel cleaner (i.e. wonder-wheels type stuff) to good effect.

Not sure I would want that all over the paintwork tho... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Thats the issue with chemicals, dont want to damage paintwork.

The grime is the stubborn stuff at the bottom of the raised chequer bits which are hard to remove with a brush. Might try some wheel cleaner carefully on it ! 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top

can't it just be removed for cleaning? that way you can use chemicals you wouldn't normally want near the paintwork

Try Britemax metal polish. Top stuff and not too pricey. I wouldn't lather it all over the paintwork but if any goes on it, just wipe off quickly and you'll be fine. If it's really grubby, some fine wire wool combined with the polish will soon sort it. They also do a sealer for metal that will protect it from dulling again in the future.
