Ive had a 118d msport 5 door hatch (143bhp stop start) for nearly 4 years now, and every day I drive it it makes me smile, the build quality is great the handling (with run flats) is ace, Ive had no problems with it (except the leather on the drivers seat cracked which was replaced without question under warranty) its on 41k it averages 42mpg with most of my driving being around town, if you try you can get 50mpg average easily. My only regret was not spending more and getting a 120d or 123d although to be honest the 118 is still a pretty nippy car.
I agree with regards to the msport seats they are quite narrow and any front seat passengers or drivers with slightly wider bottoms will not be comfy, the msport suspension is also fairly stiff but still luxury compared to the 90. Its not very roomy inside and you wont want tall passengers in the rear. I had all the usual prejudices about BMWs until I brought this one and now I dont want anything else. Finally it only needs a service every 16k or 18 months (castrol edge or equivalent) and as the servicing is condition based it works out cheaper than my Ford Mondeo 2.0tdci used to finally the 118d is £35 per year to tax
think RED DOT has a 123d DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Pretty sure the 123d is £35 a year tax too, which is crazy.

I had a test drive yestersay, clean, straight and the engine is torquey - doing some checks this morning, then probably doing the deal, same colour and wheels as LR90XL2011's

(maybe a 130d or a 330d next time, when I do less miles)

Just to say... they don't have to be rubbish in the snow. Simply fit the correct tyres for the job.....

Just watch out for the timing chain issues http://www.babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=35965

A good BMW indy over here posted this up:

Engine out job

The Service Measure covers:
'N47, N47S, N47T, slipping noises in the engine, timing chain scraping'

From:
'01/03/07 - 01/03/11'

Cause:
'Sharp edges on the chain wheels or the timing chain does not run evenly over the sliding rails'

There are two distinct methods of dealing with the problem depending on build date.

N47, N47DK0, N47S, production period 01.03.2007 to 05.01.2009:
Renew:
- 11 21 7 803 479 Exchange crankshaft with bearing shells [Crank must be manufactured after 05/01/2009] >> this suggests that all cranks prior to that build have questionable sprockets??
- 11 41 7 797 896 Chain for the oil pump drive.
- 11 31 8 506 652 Bottom timing chain.
- 13 52 7 797 906 Sprocket for the high pressure pump drive.
- 11 27 7 800 523 Gearwheel (idler gear for the balancing shafts).
- 11 31 8 510 014 Top timing chain.
- 11 31 7 797 899 Sliding rail/guide rail for the top timing chain.
- 13 52 7 797 904 Sliding rail/guide rail for the bottom timing chain.

N47, N47DK0, N47S, N47T, production period 05.01.2009 - 01.03.2011:
Renew:
- 11 31 8 506 652 bottom timing chain.
- 13 52 7 797 906 Sprocket for the high pressure pump drive.
- 11 31 8 510 014 Top timing chain.
- 11 31 7 797 899 Sliding rail/guide rail for the top timing chain.
- 13 52 7 797 904 Sliding rail/guide rail for the bottom timing chain.

----------------------------------------

Now dealing with part numbers changing or not changing; a simple quote:
'Note: New sliding rails are available from March 2011.
These sliding rails no longer have any strengthening bars.
The contact face on the sliding rails is therefore thoroughly even.
The timing chain runs quietly over the sliding rails.
The part numbers have not changed.'

----------------------------------------

The lower chain changed numbers on 21/07/2009
The top chain changed numbers twice on 23/03/2009 and 08/12/2009
Cam Sprocket changed numbers on 13/01/2011
And for good measure the turbo on these is now on the 5th number since new.

Number changes are no guarantee of a change in the part, in the same way that no change is a guarantee that the part has not changed.

----------------------------------------

The above is for the symptoms of a noisy chain/engine. When a chain breaks it's a totally different ballgame...

I'd love one but after having an Audi A4 with the BLB engine (oil pump problems) I'm sick of modern diesels, they are not worth the hassle. Tdci 110 DC

Small boot.
Ugly as sin.
Fantastic engine.
Fantastic build quality.
Poor rear visibility.
Quiet.
Absolutely as boring as hell to drive. Totally unrewarding if you like a drivers car. Fine if you must get from A to B without a smile.
Poor depreciation.
Expensive.
Poor stereo unless you spec the Alpine upgrade.
