That's the perfect description....and I still have it after removing the rear brakes and replacing the pins and springs on them. Also a healthy smear of copper grease applied. They were pretty well in place and doubted they were the cause of the noise even before carrying out the above... ...any other ideas folks? Cheers, Superspoons |

Long shot, the cover the over the fuel filter makes a noise like you describe. Take it off, see what happens.

If you have an adjustable tow hitch take off the bracket with the towball. When I did this the noise stopped and with the bracket for the towball refitted the noise returned. I jammed in some old wiper blade rubber between the braket and slider plate and have had no noise since. Worth a try. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

OK, this is driving me mad now. I have OCD trying to find this....I've crawled all under at prodded/pushed/pulled/twisted everything that could possible move and can't find a thing loose. Fuel filter cover was tight as could be.
So took it down a road with speed bumps.....crash/bang/wallop.....did the same the other way with brakes lightly applied ..no noise. How can these be! The pads are rock solid in the calipers... retaining bars/springs solid too. I am mystified...and off Cheers, Superspoons |

So it must have something to do with the brakes.... I have the same issue as you all when driving on uneven roads, but mine goes to the dealer monday for the annual service. I told them about this crash, bang, wallop, and asked them to look for what it is, told them I suspect the rear break shoes.... We will see. Will let you know. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Yep, done that, one of the first things I looked at. Wondered of they were loose/broken. Usually take them off anyway but in my case all was good. Cheers, Superspoons |

Click image to enlarge Noticed the pins look like they can move a fair bit and could be causing noise. However, if it's the pads moving then you could try some of the buffer pads that fit at the end of the calipers. Click image to enlarge |
