Agree 100%
And so you jolly well should be! I too find that figure very hard to swallow! Unless it's constant motorway driving and keeping below 2,500 rpm. The only way I would achieve anywhere near that would be if I pushed it the last 120 or so miles before refuelling. Sure you've done the maths right? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

I have a brand-new MY12 2.2 110 SW in which I recently undertook a 2,000 km trip across South Africa. I dilligently recorded full tank-to-full tank distances and corresponding consumptions for the trip which involved mostly open road cruising but also a week each of Durban and Cape Town city traffic.
Specific fuel consumption worked out at 26.22 mpg / 10.79 lit/100 km. I expected a figure in this ball-park from a new, tight engine and transmission and cruising at 120 km/hr, and it does not strike me as significantly different from my previous MY08 2.4 110 SW. In any event it should improve as the vehicle loosens up. As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, Defenders exported to South Africa are not equipped with DPFs. I can't say that I notice a difference in the the performance or driveability of the 2.2 vs the 2.4. However I must admit to the noticeably quieter cabin of the later Defender compared to the 2.4, and the total absence (believe it or not!) of rattles, squeaks and dust- and water-leaks. Remarkably the Defender beats my recently-sold MY11 Toyota Prado VX in the dust-proof department. Long may it last! |

Hi
I have a 90 2010 2.4 and I can only get 300 miles to a tank and I drive softly doesn't matter if urban, A road or motorway (70mph) 290 to 300 tops engine always seems unwilling and harsh...... Any ideas......... Thanks Ash |

Honestly? What have you done, spent £15,000 on it or did you steal the 2.4 in the first instance? |

this was all said when the 2.4 first came out. with the 2.2 once the dpf is taken off, it won't be any different to the 2.4. like this topic is showing, every landy is different, even with the same engine. |

I have a 2.2 110 sw, done 2500 miles so far, mix of motorway, a road and country roads, worked out the mpg every fill up and the average is 26.5mpg. Slightly worse then my previous Td5 at 28mpg but I suppose it may get better after a few thousand miles. I would not have the Td5 back though, 2.2 more powerfull, faster, less noisey, far better seating for pasengers, better at cruising at 70 mph better at towing the caravan.

My 2.4 90 would do 300/325 every single tank day in day out, I did get to see 400 a couple of times but this was escorting wide loads at 50mph for hours on end. The new 2.2 is only 250 miles a tank but it has to be said when the light comes on you only put 50 ltrs in where as the 2.4 light on 55 ltrs went in. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. I've been quie surprised by the poor fuel economy on my 2.2 110. I don't do big mileage so it's not the end of the world but my best / worst / average is only 23 / 18 / 21 which seems a lot thirstier than most. Admittedly the last few tanks (including the 1 were hammering along the autoroute at 130km/h but even so...
Am running 255/85/16 KM2s with spacers which probably doesn't help but I wouldn't have thought it makes that much difference. |

Speed will make the big difference. I am running 285s, full cage and about another extra 300kg in protection and recovery gear and still pull back 26-28mpg from my 2.4. But then again. Before the Defender I had a V8 Discovery returning a constant 20mpg, and before that a Rover Coupe turbo with 320bhp which returned 8mpg when driven hard- Why did I move on- was it because of economy?..... Well, when I drove the Coupe I dreamt of Land Rovers.... so got the Discovery at the right price..... but once I had that I dreamt of Defenders...... and well, now I have it I am over the moon...... it isn't about MPGs it is about that smile you have on your face and the good feeling inside when you see/ drive it. otherwise I would be like all the other douche bags who drive around in mind numbing uncharacteristic Jap/ euro boxes- what a boring way to live your life!! 2010 90 XS. I don't spare the horses and do a combination of country A/B roads , Motorways and minimal city driving with annual touring holidays on the continent. I have completed 26,777 miles
Over 9127 m ( 14689.9 K ) I have used 361.48 gulls ( 1643.32 L ) giving an average of 25.25 mpg ( 11.19L/100K ). Seeing as my previous vehicle was a Mazda RX8 which rarely got above 20mpg and used £700+ worth of tyres / year and 1L of expensive oil / 2000 miles ( it's designed to do that ) I have become more environmentally friendly. But who cares - I now enjoy every mile I drive. LANDYWATCH Neighbourhood Watch for Land Rover Owners http://www.landywatch.co.uk/smf2/index.php |

Well said. The "smiles per gallon" are huge in the Defender. I'd probably still have one if it returned 10mpg! |
