We are off to Switzerland next week, going via Germany and coming back via France, Belgium and then Holland - I would be pretty disapointed if our new(ish) Puma let us down, as I did the same trip last year in a 1957 Series One!! - without any problems at all! Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

I have 77k on my puma......it never misses a beat........I service it every 8k irrespective fords big mileage service intervals. Current...07 90 Puma commercial

Same here. Including the clutch  
Annual service as prescribed, which means abt every 8000 miles, but then in between another engine oil+filter change. First time I changed all the other fluids (gear- and transfer box, front/rear diffs) was after 30000 miles so well ahead of what LR prescribes, and from now on this will be done abt every 10000 miles. I know we read a lot of horror stories abt the Puma reliability, but I know people in the local LR dealership here, and invariably those who do not trash their motor, have quite good reliability. I have abt 36000 miles now, and nothing serious sofar, early on they had to replace the EGR once, and then more recently I had a leak in the rear diff oil seal which had to be replaced. Otherwise, a gem You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Same here. We did 1400miles in France over the last 2 weeks. No issues at all. I didn't miss my RR TD6 and to be honest - we may have got there a little quicker, but its "How you arrive, not how fast"...
(Ok the RR would've been quieter, but we got more wine in the 110 on the back!) Cheers, Superspoons |

Just did 6500km (some 4040 miles?), with a 700kg caravan on the back, from Lisbon to England and back, and it performed very well! No faults! (I thing my turbo cover broke on one of the brackets, it's rattling - does that count?)
The fuel consumption?! Well that's another story! Don't want to do the math!  but to maintain a speed of aproximatley 100/110 kmh (65/70 ml ?) the scangauge told me that I did an average of 13,5/14L per 100km  ...can't do that in miles per gallon... Regards

your figures are equal to mine with an - Ifor HB505 horsebox (loaded or not didn't make a difference) - 7m (23ft) RIB Lower your speed to 90-100 km/h and you'll drop below 10 (taking care on a 100km trip i even managed 8.7 with the horsebox) It is incredible how consumption jumps up once you pass the 100 mark. As mentioned elsewhere we did the 1400 home stretch with RTT and loaded as can be with an avg speed of 83km/h (thats staying between 90/100 all the time possible) using 7.6 l avg Driving 100-110 gave us 10.7 if i remember correctly.  |

I noticed that!
On my way back, I did almost 400km in France, never went over 100 km/h...and managed to do just a few hundred km more with the same amount of fuel....I usually do 10,5/11L per 100km, on a mixed usage around here...I've manged to do 9,5L per 100km when going on vacation here, towing my RIB on national roads, where it is dificult to go over 100km/h... But 80-90Km/h on the highways in Spain/France/England is very boooriiinngzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! Sho........ you okes up north get me worried some times!! You were worried that the Puma wont cope on tarred roads in France?????? I gues there is then no hope for us in deep, dark Africa where we have to "build our own roads or drive non-existing roads and if anything goes wrong your only hope is a satelite phone and hopefully "quick" help in about two or three days time......
Example: We drove from Maun to Chobe in Botswana---200 odd km took us 11 hours minus all our teeth and no nuts or bolts left on the car. Or the "road" from Pafuri in RSA to Vilankulos in Mozambique---480km takes about 33 hours and without any paint left on the car.  Last edited by Regard on 14th Aug 2012 2:31pm. Absolutely! Thanks to my Scangauge, going round Italy I think I used 1/2 the fuel I did last year. Moreover, driving at 100 along the motorways hardly makes any time difference on long trips if you stop for a rest now and again (and the music sounds better too) Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

My trip back from France on the weekend was nearly faultless.
As the general population rushed to the empty but now open lane on the peage, I got there first. Opening the passenger window I swiftly leant over to pay the lady and with the deed done sat back down to drive off. With a smile on my face I engaged first gear knowing I had saved myself at least a five minute wait, it was then that my gearbox gave way completely! Try as I might I couldn't get any drive, first, second, not even reverse, nothing!! By this stage and some minutes later, there were horns and some friendly gestures with hands, Upon opening my door with a very red face I thought I would try one last thing, yes, you guessed it, my knee had hit the transfer gearbox knob and knocked it into neutral!!!
