how long should a steering box last?
Hi all. I have had my 90 for 18 months now. When I got it it had a 3 month warranty under which the steering box was replaced. It has now started weeping. I will be ringing and bitching at the indy I got it from on point of principle. However what is the usual life span of a steering box after all the first one lasted 13 years so I might have expected ten from the new one.

Cheers. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Originals (built by Adwest) at least ten years or 100K miles. Replacement (reconditioned by LR) more like 1 month or 2K miles, based on my experiences.

If possible buy your replacements from Adwest not LR, since they will be properly built to manufacturer's standards.

I think you've answered your own question there. It should be measured in years or tens of thousands of miles.

I wonder if the one they fitted came in a blue box? Darren

Given that everything else they touched on my car has withered and died I would not be surprised if it were a blue box special. What makes this worse is that prior to being sold this heap the bloke who owns the place was a decent mate. Not now. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Wow, that's even less than my Genuine Parts replacement box fitted by a main dealer at fantastic expense! That one lasted about a month.

When I contacted the place that had supplied it, they said "We're very sorry, but we can offer you a replacement, but there's no guarantees that it will last any longer!"

Bitching got me all of nowhere. So it seems I have a new annual service item in the form of a steering box seal kit. P.O.S. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

When you next need one, see if you can get a recon one from Adwest of Reading (who make them in the first place). If you can, it will be built to the same quality and standard as the original. If you get one from anywhere else, it will be of unknown quality.

As I touched on above, my Disco2 box lasted 6.5 years and 130k miles then developed a slight leak. An LR main dealer replaced it with a "new" (actually reconditioned, all "Genuine Parts" ones are) one which lasted about 1 month then was leaking worse. That was replaced under warranty with another, which lasted just long enough to be out of warranty (a year and a week after No 2 was fitted) and they started leaking badly from the top.

In the end I bought an untouched one off an older but lower mileage Disco2 via ebay which although a bit "growly" is working fine 50k miles later. I also rebuilt No 3 properly myself but haven't got round to fitting it yet.

The box on my '07 Puma is original and is fine at present (though saying that may jinx it) and has done just over 100k miles.

My puma had the original replaced under warrany at its first service.

So far the replacement has been fine leakwise [4 years on], but does have a hell of a lot of play .. i keep meaning to adjust it Neutral Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Always go for Adwest. I had 2 replacements for my 200tdi from NPS, and both lasted a few months I think. Complete waste of time.

Then bought a new one from Adwest and it has been perfect ever since
