Bored today .. work very quiet, so decided to do a job i've put off for a few months, pop the hubs off and regrease the wheel bearings.
Well ... first thing plainly obvious is LR certainly don't overdo it with the grease on assembly! Probably only 'just' enough in each hub to do an adequate job More of a worry was the red rust in both rear hubs!! No sign of water present [now] but obviously been weeping in there from time to time. A better packing with grease would go a long way to prevent this. I changed all bearing just in case [although they cleaned up reasonably well] and packed all 4 hubs with as much grease as fitted ....and this on a 5 year old motor with less than 20k on the clock. Well worth checking your's guys if you are able, prevent a forthcoming breakdown just waiting to strike ... Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Not uncommon, this was mine when I checked it - had been getting a click (clonk) from the rear when starting to reverse
That was the better one... Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated |

i know its a different kettle of fish, but the Ashcroft axles have two drive member bolts that you removed to replenish the grease in the bearings in situ. pump it in through the top one until it comes out clean from the bottom hole.
CVs are also greasable in situ by pumping the grease up the CV shaft which is threaded to take a grease nipple. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

I've found exactly the same on our Puma, Zero grease on the rear drive splines so they've corroded and the mess fortunately didn't get to the bearing (well not that I could see) but it probably had a detrimental effect.
I had about a 5th of a turn of slack in the rear prop. Cue new flanges and halfshaft and it's a lot better. All for 0.1p of copper slip at the factory! 90XS Tdci John Eales 110 CSW G4 Edition 88" Series 3 Racer |

I know it's an old topic but just wondering does anyone know off hand what size socket is needed to open the wheel bearing nuts on the rear axle ?
It's just I had a look a couple of weeks ago and had no socket to suit, I measured the nut with the calipers to order a socket but have forgotten the measurement. |

Resurrecting an old thread... I have been getting a clunk/click when I engage reverse or downshift into 2nd/1st, when seems to be emanating from the rear of the 110... Also a squeaking sound from one of the front wheels - last time had anything similar it was on the wife's car, and the bearing ended up going at 80mph on the motorway.
Is there a how-to for regreasing the bearings? WOuld what is in the Haynes manual suffice (written in the pre-Puma days, I know - thinking maybe the Td5 has the same layout?) |
