United Kingdom 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Rimini Red
Strangly I am seeing little difference running with the egr closed. MPG is more or less the same. this is with a standard tune. Only whne I got rid of the cat and had the new exhaust fitted did i see an improvment.

Do you think it is wise every 3 months to run it with the egr normally for a couple of weeks?

Hmmm, what diesel are you using? Our diesel in S.Africa is only 50ppm.

If your EGR valve is sticking it is possible to clear with a bit of brute force and ignorance ie whack it a few times with a hammer. Pimped black '07 Puma

Help me out here mate.Wink what is this thing with the EGR closed?? I read this and don't know what's going on? As you know my 09 puma is out of warranty! What is the EGR? Why should one close it?

The EGR is basically a system where the exhaust gas is fed back into the engine to reduce combustion temperatures and thereby reducing harmful emissions. Some more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaust_gas_recirculation

However, it is bad because it increases fuel consumption and over time the intake manifold gets fouled up, EGR valve becomes clogged, etc.

So it's generally a good idea to remove the EGR on a TDi. Unfortunately on the Puma the EGR is controlled by the ECU and if you remove/bypass it, the Engine Malfunction Light will come on and stay on.

So the BAS/Alive remap basically tells the ECU to keep the EGR closed and the net result is that your engine runs cleaner and fuel consumption is bettered.

IIRC, there is a russian fellow who has removed the EGR completely, search around for this thread, it may be worth considering. --

and what if we just unplug the EGR connector? MIL lights, OK, but does the engine still work fine with EGR disconnected? Is there any risk? Does the ECU fall into degraded mode?

Engine will work fine, in fact, it will run better.

BUT if the MIL light is always on, when will you know if something really goes go wrong? Whistle --

and dont forget that by pulling the EGR plug the ECU will calculate on average maps for fuel/air mixture as if the EGR is broken and has no influence.

While a lot of people reported less consumption with the EGR unplugged i am 2 liters/100km down since plugging it back in. (a lot of towing)

I would only consider a software patch or a real "mechanical" solution that fools the ECU in believing all is functional.

Good point.
But for what kind of reason does the MIL occur?
I guess when there is a deadly issue (oil pressure, water T°C) you'll have a another red light on the dashboard, am I wrong?
So as long as the engine drives well, what is the matter with having the MIL ON?

You mean the ECM will take into account that EGR is out of order for its mixture management. Seems to be perfect, as it is the case indeed.
What is wrong with that?

I could be wrong, but I don't think there's any other light that comes on?

In my case I have a Madman EMS, so if engine oil pressure/coolant level/coolant temp/EGT are abnormal, I have a backup alarm. It is a good idea to get one of these, since you can monitor real-time figures and not rely on the ECU's alarm.

Reviving this post. I wana unplug my ERG and run it for a bit to see fuel consumption?

Any negatives appart from the warning light?
Does this light (fault) clear itself once plugged back?

hello, if i understand well, i can unplug my egr valve , i'll only get light on dashbord? but i hurd, after 3 times running engine, default stays in ECU and your engine run in downgraded mode, true?
