I run four crew vans withing heavy engineering sector. They have a huge amounnt of kit in them, I use Bosch to supply our 9" grinders as I find these the most cost effective. However the drills (not battery but 110v) are all Makita, anything else just does not last or put up with the abuse. This for me justifies the cost but if you want a something that you are not going to abuse, want to last and use every single day I say the cost of a makita may be too much. Some makes are really made of cheese and not worth bothering with, but these are mostly at the cheaper end. I have in the past bought some cheaper models to get out of a hole but always regretted it.

Of course they won't!  But I think the clue may have been in the thread title 'cordless' Excossack obviously wants this for a reason?
Any mains supplied equipment be it 110v or otherwise will naturally out-perform battery supplied tools with power and torque. The disadvantages are just as obvious.....lugging a bl00dy heavy transformer about and in my scenario finding a convenient 240v supply to plug it into for starters. As above loads of people have their own opinions...... so sod it, here is my 2p
I use cordless drills, grinders saws etc on a daily basis on wood, metal, stone and plastics. I personally own a DeWalt 18v Li-Ion batteries. Which are also compatible with my DeWalt grinder. Not cheap (but cheaper than the Bosch). After 3 years of ownership in all sorts of conditions (Afghan, UK, Cyprus, Germany) for many hours I have only had one single problem where it locked into hammer drill function- it took 10 mins and security screwdriver to rectify and not done it in the 6 months since. Work provide us with Makita, and yes they are awesome.... but we have had 2 fail in the past 3 years so now mine gets used all the time as it just keeps going and going. I have 5 batteries (2 with drill, 3 with grinder) and after 3 years they are all still going strong. I can go a week without having to charge if need be- Unless I am grinding which eats battery power. Don't let warranty put you off- you can buy half the parts for less than the cost of postage to send it to the approved repairer. Glyn   |

The Makita comes in at a ballpark price of £250....the Dewalt one I mentioned is 'on special' at £85 this weekend...for me it would be a no brainer buy a Dewalt or maybe two and still save £80...
American made Dewalts are in my opinion (someone else touched on the subject) the best and the Czech Republic ones (I think they are made elsewhere too under licence) may or may not be as good. My Czech manufactured one is still to let me down after being heavily abused by myself and having been dropped from a considerable height into oil and seawater filled bilges several times. Know what? Ryobi 'cheap and cheerful has also served me well in the past! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Sorry maybe I was not clear by what I said. I was merely tying highlight the difference between the makes and how the gap in quality varies. Off course I was not comparing a 110 to an 18v and I should have pointed out that I was comparing a Makita 110v to one of the cheaper options of the same voltage. Makita obviously feel they are 'at the top of their game' as they are one of the most expensive. I suppose it can perhaps be compared to buying a Defender....Do you go for a base model or top of the range SVX when both are equally capable offroad? It also obviously depends upon...How deep are your pockets at the time of purchase of course?

Hilti and only hilti, have tried and broke dewalt, hitachi ,Bosch and Makita , though the hitachi was good.

Hilti are very good I have to agree with that. Their service is good A1. There rebar cutters are excelent too. |

Well, some varied and interesting views on here.
Nonetheless I bought one of the dewalt ones on offer at B&Q this weekend. The case clips are like tin so I don't expect it to last long, but the drill itself seems pretty good tbh. I have another li-on battery which will work just as well if the nicad ones do fail. The last nicad battery drill I had lasted me 12 years, so my view is if these only last a couple I can get another battery without too much hassle as its thier std fit battery. All good in my eyes. Exactly where I got mine.... was £285 but after the discount for the lack of packaging (cardboard box), display model and then 50% off all tools I picked it up for £68!!! It is one of their professional range and is put together way better than some of their base line cheapo ones. Bodsy.... I thought the same about clips but have had no problems from them

The Makita one you have linked to is an excellent bit of kit
I have the Bosch and would suggest you go for the Makita. Why ? Only a 10mm chuck on the Bosch, 13mm on the Makita. Does not sound a lot of difference but... However, the biggest problem with the Bosch is the chuck constantly keeps coming undone, there are quite a few complaints on the web about it.
