Decisions decisions!
Hi guys, newbie here and proud new owner of 1 black 90xs (well almost, I pick it up next week Very Happy )...and the first thing to address are the tyres, as it's coming on SVX rims I was wondering if they're 7 inch or 7.5 inch diameter?
I'm going for a set of St Maxx's and am sorely tempted by 285's, only thing making me hesitate is the affect on turning circle. All advice greatly appreciated Smile

Are you also aware that with wider tyre's there may well also be a slight drop in fuel economy too? But as a counter to that there is also more rubber on the road so more grip. Thumbs Up ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Yep aware of that but after selling a V8 Audi to buy the Defender frankly most things will be more frugal so not that bothered if it makes it more thirsty....thinking of the 285 as opposed to 265 purely on the fact that they might look better...shallow I know Laughing

If the vehicle is new then I would be most concerned about how changing the tyre size would affect the warranty. And oh, the rim diameter is 16 inches!

It isn't clear if in fact your 90 is a new one? It also depends on how 'conscientious' you may be about the terms and conditions of your warranty. I 'modified' my Defender quite considerably before my warranty expired for two reasons...

1. I had faith in the vehicle itself.
2. I didn't have the patience to wait until the warranty expired.

A prudent thing (perhaps) that I did was to retain all 'redundant' swap out parts until the warranty ran out so they could possibly be swapped back again in the event of issues. In my case retention wasn't needed as I didn't have any problems.
My dealer knew of the modifications and each and every dealer has a different spin/frame of mind about them and how it may or may not affect your warranty. Have a word with him to 'sound it out!'

Talking of tyres my dealer refused to road test my vehicle as they implied my tyres were too wide which made it illegal. What tosh!!!! Change of Service Manager = Change of opinion and they don't seem to have any issues now. Two MOTs later and not even a cautionary for the tyres. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Cheers K9F, yeah would be keeping the parts I'm replacing now for refitting if I decide to trade in at a later date or to put back on if I thought there'd be a warranty issue. Only intending some cosmetic changes for the time being so no engine/suspension etc.. tampering.
My dealer has been spot on to work with so far, plus my uncle used to work for them years ago and some of the old timers are still there and speak highly so I'm hoping that'll come in handy in the parts discount area too Laughing

Haha.. I think I had the wishlist compiled before I'd decided which model to buy lol. Anguished a long time over whether to go for a 50th as a neighbour has one and I always drooled over it but in the end slightly more refinement, warranty and 14 years less wear and tear won over (as it'll be a daily driver) Smile

I have the same tyres in 265s and Dotz ET11 rims and they look meaty enough to me. If I was still using Boosts (ET33) I would use 30mm spacers to sit them similarly level with the arches. Love the Maxxs - very good all round Thumbs Up

As far as turning circle is concerned, the ET11 rims (and spacers when I had the Boosts) meant the steering stops could be adjusted and that made a massive (!) difference. I can now get into "normal" parking places (and my drive).

I also thought about 285s but I was warned about fuel consumption and road noise (although they are fairly quiet ) and aggravation getting them approved in Germany.

Hi Matt,
They look the part indeed, I decided on them as I like their more aggressive tread and look plus I'm guessing they're a lot quieter than STT's and ( I'm no expert but) I'd say they're better in the wet and I'd like to get round roundabouts without ending up on my doorhandles Shocked

You don't have a pic of your boosts with spacers by any chance?
Only thing putting me off the 285's is the fact that if a lot of lock was lost even with stops adjusted I'd prob have to put spacers on to get it back and then they might just stick out too much Neutral

Optically, the spacers make a helluva difference with the skinnier tyres. Boost + Maxx 165s + 30mm spacers would be a very nice combination with good, tight handling IMHO.

Tyres are such a personal choice - many on here swear by BFGs. I went for Cooper Maxxs partly because they look meaty Whistle but mostly for their overall performance on ice, snow and tarmac. They can also be studded Rolling Eyes The most pleasant surprise was how quiet they are at 80 mph and how well they are wearing despite hammering the autobahns.

I know I'm gushing in a stomach-wrenching manner Embarassed but I really can't fault them :thumbsup:

I think you've swayed me towards the 265's and if needs be then some spacers too...do you know if the boosts and SVX alloys were the same width?
Is that an Entreq snow cover I see as well? Smile
