yeeehaaaa !
I've probably tempted fate however I'm so excited I just had to share this with you.

although mentioned in other threads I don't think any of the subject related directly to this.....

after pulling my hair out for the last 18months trying to figure out whats been wrong with my car and everyone telling me its fine I think I've got to the bottom of it.....a loose ABS fuse.

granted it may still be early days to be 100% its resolved but early indications are good. the symptoms which I would describe as similar to fuel starvation appear to be resolved. although I would never have consider the abs fuse could impact on the engine running etc it would appear from another thread 'engine management / abs' that the two are linked (most of the discussion I have to say goes over my head tho Embarassed - diff-locks and the likes.....only just found out the defender comes with 4 wheel drive as standard).

so.....all in all one very happy bunny.

now thats sorted I can give some serious consideration to a BAS upgrade.....can any one tell my what the payback period is given I'm hoping to see a better return on fuel following a remap? Very Happy

Nothing surprises me anymore...
Today I learnt that, to get an oil service light out on a mondeo, you turn ignition on and then press both accelerator and brake at same time for 15 seconds....the more I learn, the more I want a tdi !!! Or a v8 on boxer manifolds Cool

Awesome news- I love it when you read something else and then it makes you realise what your problem is!!

As for the re-map... Don't know about BAS, but here are my figures with Alive map:

Without map: 25.5mpg (roughly)

With map: 28 mpg (roughly)

Average miles per year: 12,000

Gallons used without map (PA): 470.6

Gallons used with map (PA): 428.6

That is 42 Gallons less a year or 191 litres..... so I save about £200 a year on fuel ( but in uk that would be about £250ish)......

BUT- Even if I didn't save a penny on fuel it is still more than worth it!!!

greeni,

like you say nothing suprises anymore - couldn't agree more........

in fact just the other night some little scrout drove about 200 yrd from his house into 'our' road pulled up and dumped all his rubbish in his car onto our pavement !!! Evil or Very Mad

Gly

it took sometime and bearing in mind I had for sometime thought it could be electrical I didn't think of the obvious - fuses. was convinced it was an electrical part or the wiring loom.

interesting on the map. excellent even. did you have it mapped for economy ?

Thumbs Up

and Thumbs Up to everyone that and helped and Thumbs Up to everyone hearing about my constant moaning.

another drive in the motor this morning and its still looking like problem solved Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I had it re-mapped for power....... economy seems to be a by-product.

I do a lot of off-road, motorway, towing and just general heavy duty driving so wanted more power to help- plus have a roll cage, 285s and a whole load of other bolt-ons which slow it down.

the fuse is under the steering wheel. from memory its 1 up from the bottom of the column second from right.

not sure how to break this tho.........

I'm no longer convinced its solved the problem......jury is still out on this

Could anyone (Gary or Pete maybe) confirm this link between ABS fuse and ECU behavior?

Guess this should be in the OEM coding or linked to the electrics (eg engine sensor which takes its power from same line as ABS)

The reason i am asking is that i have a switch inline with the fuse to disable TC if i like.

I drove the car also multiple times on-road with ABS/TC disabled (so same as if the fuse was taken out) and I have nill effects on the Engine/ecu from this.

Don't want to spoil the yeeehaaa, just looking for confirmation.

It may be that the problem is caused by it switching rapidly and intermittently, i.e., a poor connection, rather than a steady state on/off.

In view of what I found in my under-column fuse box I would recommend everyone checking theirs at some stage, especially if strange behaviour is being experienced. As I posted elsewhere, when I removed the 'sellotape' that had been put over the fuses apparently at build time to secure them, at least half the fuses in the fusebox simply fell out.
