What snorkel sealant?
If I ever get my Safari snorkel sorted out what would you recommend I should seal it with? I know many say you should use marine sealant but I can’t get that at B&Q, so what brand or sort that is readily available should I go for?

Is it a B & Q stock item you're after or the stuff best suited to your needs? Sikaflex is available on line....

Sikaflex 29i is for me the best sealant available. If it's good enough for one of these....

I used 3M 4200 adhesive sealant on the company D3 (had some left over from fitting out the fleet of RIBs,so thought I would use it up), and would definitely recommend it having had no problems on either boats or the truck.

If you can't get hold of it, online chandlers such as Force4 or Mailspeedmarine usually stock it (or eb*y...)

OK so I have just spent three hours trying to get the old Matec/LR RAI off. One of the rivinut had seized and it was the one that you can't get to behind the antilock block. Anyway it is off now, and it wasn't in a very good state. The bottom of the snorkel has worn away the paint on the wing but the new one should cover that. The problem now I have is the sealant they have used I just can't get it off! I put a heat gun on it to see if it would soffen it enough to peal it back but it didn't and is stuck fast! Any idea of what to use to get rid of it without recking the paint work?

Looks like a resin or Araldite in the lower edge. I would suggest trying a scalpel or a Stanley knife blade to try to get behing it and carefully peel or slice it off. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I agree with K9F. Thumbs Up
If it doesn't work try dabbing it with ascertone to degrade the bond (although it shouldn't have ANY effect on the metal, try it on an area that you can't see first etc... Thumbs Up )

Acetone may remove it if resin based.

Nick the wifes nail polish remover under the cover of darkness and try that - they are normally acetone based Thumbs Up

You may want to put a small amount on a hidden area of paint first to make sure it does not remove that as well Shocked

Even if you can't get it all off as long as you get the majority off together with the lumps and bumps you can form a new bed of sealant over the old when you fit the replacement, if you don't wish to seal it the gasket will cover it. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Is it resin based and rock hard or is it still flexible? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I told you to wait until after dark, you will be in trouble now Laughing

Put some on a small area and leave it for 30 minutes and see if it has softened it. Depending on exactly what they have used if may take quite a long soak time to be any use.

Just reread the thread, as it's like concrete if you've a wallpaper scraper to hand place it on the inner edge and a careful sharp tap with the pointed corner should free it up. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
