Two weeks ago I was on the M6 in what can only be described as Noah's ark conditions. Overtaking a lorry up Shap at about 65mph, when the engine stuttered. Backed off a bit and was expecting to pull over, but it carried on as normal after that so I left it.
On getting home and fiddling with the car, I notice the air filter (standard LR paper one, only a few weeks old) has warped and looks like it's been wet, although it has now dried out. The pleats on the bottom are splayed and some have lumps of dirt in. Can't quite work out how this has happened. I have a snorkel, sealed to the bodywork. Checked the air inlet and no holes or damage - likewise the filter box. Haven't been wading for over a year. The only thing I can think of is that the spray off the lorry and other vehicles was at exactly the wrong height and overwhelmed the air intake. Guess it'd be pulling air in fairly hard at 65mph. Anyone else had this happen? Confused of Cumbria |

check the drain hole in the base of the air box. I have had water rush up that and cause a drenched filter/stuttering engine. It's happened when going through standing water at speed.
solution is seal it with RTV sealant and also the airbox too. My snorkel top was turned the opposite way too to stop water getting in that way |

Right, didn't even realise there was a drain hole in the air box (being a short arse I can't see down that far), so I'll have a look at that with a view to blocking it up. Don't think I can turn the snorkel top round as it's a Mantec one not a Safari. Ta

This is a well documented fault with the Mantec 'plastic jobby' RAI .... have a look on LRUK forums, plenty of people having same issue.
Have a word with Mantec, others have. Doubt they'll do anything, but at least they'll know it's a more common problem. Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. Last edited by Dave-H on 6th Jul 2012 12:25pm. Edited 1 time in total |
