Just paid about £400 for my 24k mile service, make sure they change the brake fluid (required by the service manual but not covered in the cost) and make sure they do the corrosion check Thumbs Up Russell

Check the above section out on the Opie Oils home page. It explains clearly your rights regarding servicing your vehicle yourself or getting an independent to do it. Gives you the do's and don't. Very informative. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Maybe total madness, but i've not had my 12 month service done. It came down to a simple lack of value for money, you could argue that it's an insurance policy, however over 300 quid for a simple oil change and quick once over didn't appeal to me!

The money has been spent on a full DIY service plus a top up of the rust proofing, leaving over 200.00 quid spare.

The car did develop a grinding noise on overun, before the 12 month point and the dealers were unable to fix it. Greased the propshafts and sorted!

Hopefully nothing will go wrong over the next 2 years, but if it does I will have probably saved about 1100 quid over 3 years to help cover it.

Exactly. If you're saving hundreds of pounds each year on labour costs for someone at the local dealer to undo some bolts and pour some fluids then even if your Land Rover is worth a couple of grand less when you come to sell it I doubt you'd be out of pocket much!

Personally I'd rather buy a vehicle from someone who's done their own servicing (and can back that up with receipts for filters/fluids etc.) than from someone who entrusts it to someone else. But I realise that most people's view would differ.

i would agree past the warranted 3/4 years but within it thats just stupid, it gives them a get out argument every time....!

Pretty sure if you use parts and oils to their specification (ie. genuine filters etc.) and can prove that with reciepts etc. then they haven't got a leg to stand on. There are laws preventing them from forcing you to pay them to carry out the work, all they can require is that the specification is followed.

Agreed. Even if genuine parts and correct lubricants are used I wouldn't be at all surprised if they might try to roll out the 'work having to be carried out by suitably qualified technicians' line. Steve.

Land Rover's "Working in the Wild" handbook gives detail on how to set up a servicing facility, and service your vehicle in remote places away from any dealers whatsoever. Follow the servicing schedule and use recommended fluids and parts and you are O.K. The handbook was specifically brought out for those heading off the beaten track for long periods of time and who have no dealer to depend on.No mention whatsoever of heading of and doing your own servicing and maintenance could invalidate the warranty.
Had a leaking radiator so I consulted the handbook. Told me I could use an egg so I put one in the radiator and it sealed it up. A maindealer would have sold me a new one! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Back in 2004 I had a Renault Clio DCi 100, at about 2 and a half years old the clutch slave cylinder went, gearbox out job.

This car had been self serviced and the local dealer told me to %$^^&^^ off when I asked about a warranty claim, however after emailing Renault Uk and stating that the slave cylinder is not a part that would be touched during a service, they soon told the dealer to complete the work free.

Unfortunately the garage strained all the plastic air intake ducting when they dropped the engine and it leaked air ever after! New bits of pipe were hundreds of pounds and they wouldn't accept that they had damaged the cheap plastic connectors whilst doing the clutch.

Needless to say it got bound in gaffer tape, which kinda worked.
