it really does seem who you talk to and on which side of bed they bailed out of with issues like this, i had a starter go on a td5 disco low miles admittedly but six months out of warranty sorted free of charge, and had my leg lifted with a new turbo on a disco 3 10 days out of warranty and they would do a thing, oh things are very different now we are owned by TATA sir.

there are lots of transit 2.4s on ebay £2000 approx new, there is also a new short engine, generally Puma ones turn up as well. I would also try JE and other tuners whom do engine conversions, not long ago JE were advertising complete engines for sale, it all depends on how much you have to spend, can yours be rebuilt.
Easier still is go to Ian at IRB (PORNY on here) he has a good reputation in the Landy Press and on here and he wont want to loose it. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

taking it to the dealers, they have already offered a 1000 towards it, but they will pay all of it. soooo much trouble with it. apparently bad chipping caused it, blown the piston to bits. but it was already chipped when they sold it too me, all serviced all the time, just was serviced like 300 miles before it went! tows all the time but a joke it going. would be very careful about chipping again

Was it a plug-in chip or an ECU remap? -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

What a crock. There's no way chipping on its own could cause a piston to fail really, unless there's an inherent weakness. Chip or no chip, if you rev that weak engine all the time or load it up, it's going to fail. The remap might put a bit more stress on the engine, but really all it's doing is showing up the defect early.
Reserve factors in engine parts will be many times the expected level of stress the engine will see. So if a chip gives you 30% more torque, you'll still be way off destroying bits of it - if they're manufactured properly. Sounds to me like the dealer trying to weedle out of paying by making poor excuses. And if they sold it to you chipped (and this caused the failure as they allege), then surely they should be paying the entire cost of a replacement? |

Poor tuning can cause engine failure - either a plug in chip or a poor re-map can put stresses on the engine that it can't handle and cause failures. John

As a machine engineer I object. Chiping can cause serious damage if 1. not done correctly, or 2. not treated well after chipping. If you dont know what to do and press an engine to its limit by being stupid, the regular puma is built to survive that ('cause many of the maniac transit drivers are brain dead) but chipped it does not. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel. |
