This is correct.
It will apply the brakes to the wheel that is turning faster.
It doesn't I don't think the diffs are up to the forces involved thats all When driving off road at some point you will find that you will have to apply some gas. Lets say going through a snowdrift. At some point one of the tyres will loose traction the TC will apply the brakes to this spinning wheel, the drive force will be transfered through the diff to the other wheel that has grip, this wheel will then push the car forward Now can you imagine the forces that are involved in the above scenario You have a spinning wheel that has just been stopped, the opposite wheel with grip plus the load of the car on it is being forced to turn. The poor diff is under a lot of stress. And that was just for that split second. This will happen 20 or 50 times a second (not sure of the exact pulse rate) The diff need to be very strong to endure this punishment and when diffs are failing on vehicles that don't leave the tarmac the off road vehicle diffs don't stand a chance. The fuses for TC/ABS are under the drivers seat they can be pulled and the vehicle will drive fine. We had to do this in Morocco when the front axle exploded on the Utility. When the diffs fail on Chelsea I will get them replaced under warranty remove them and get Mr Ashcroft to supply me with decent diffs and drive shafts all round. Sonic demonstrating wheel spin |

i agree with all your above post bar the fact that the spinning wheel with no grip will not necessarily be brought to a stop (it may be but not always) the TC just has to make the spinning wheel the harder option so the power goes the other way. how much breaking and how frequent TC works depends on level of grip of the other tyre. that of course doesn't get over the fact that the forces involved are massive i totally agree that the diffs are useless. My first one went soon after an off roading session with a fair amount of TC working. since then the replacement has been fine until it did some more 'serious' off road - by serious i mean enough to induce alot of TC activity and now the 'new' rear diff is starting to moan a little. i had a chat to a land rover experience instructar about my lack of T/C and he said that when it kicks in it can (and by can he ment not always) put the brakes on harder than you would be able to do with as much force on the pedal, this can create a shock wave traveling through the drive train, i take from this that the old land rover saying of as slow as possable but as fast as nessasery still applys with the puma's. no T/C hasn't stop'd me yet and i'm still on general grabbers!

Are the 09/10 diffs any stronger than the first puma diffs or is it a case of after market diffs to cure the problem! Andrew now the utility has gone what are you using for serious off road work.

mine is a 09MY and rear diff went, they are all same as, there was a batch of faulty diffs mind which contributed to the problem. Cheers

I'm not sure if resurrecting this thread is the right way to go or not so apologies if there's already an answer on the forum I haven't found.
I've recently had a half day on the Experience course at Dunkeld and in discussion with the Instructor they suggested that up to 2012 TC was an option on the Defender. I have a MY2012 110 USW XS, other than finding a scenario where TC should kick in is there any way to check if I have this or not? This thread suggests that I should have it, however the most recent posts are 2009 so I have no idea if something has changed since then. Thanks Keith Keith |

I believe if you turn the key to the position before start (as you would to warm the glow plugs) your ABS and TC light should stay on for a few moments and then go out.
If your Defender isn't fitted with either, the lights won't ignite. Give the manual a read it may shed a bit more light than I can |

Not 100% on this, (but probably 99%) but so far as I know, but in order to have Traction Control, you must have ABS. With ABS, you will have 2 brake lines to your rear differential, non ABS will only have 1. it's a Landrover thing...

Pretty simple to check without having to skid.
Look at the swivel housing top pin, if you have TC/ABS there will be a cable running from it back towards the vehicle front. Don't get it confused with the diff breather though. Not having it, I'm not sure where it is located on the rear?? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |
