That ties up John, 10P was used , I think, from the start of the TD5's up to the change to EU3 spec in 2001/2.
It is the 2001/2 registered vehicles that seem to have what was on the shelf when it was built ![]() I would guess the more popular vehicles are likely to have the EU3 engines but this is Land Rover we are talking about here so anything is possible. Interesting, all the research I have done shows the 15P's had steel dowels, obviously that is not correct. Maybe it was at some point in the 15P's run that they were changed.
Where are the experts when you need them ? ![]() Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

That is one of the reasons I bought the truck, I figured getting the later one would mean less problems.
Ho Hum. The car is a 52 Plate first registered 15/11/2002. Strangely just noticed my V5 says the truck has a revenue weight of 3500kgs - thouth they were 3050kgs? Oh well. 2002 Defender 110 DC |

And this looks like the answer !
According to this mine has plastic dowels as well. All td5 derivatives within VIN range ds2 02 my 2A736340 - 3A793895 def 02 my 2A622424 - 3A647705 Cylinder head locating dowels. Td5 engines fitted to vehicles within the above VIN range are fitted with plastic dowels to locate the cylinder head onto the cylinder block. LRE has intrduced steel locating dowels from the following VINs. ds2 - 3A793895 def - 3A647705 IMPORTANT If a cylinder head is removed from a vehicle in the above VIN range, the plastic dowels must be replaced with new spec steel dowels, which are now available from LR parts. CAUTION TD5's prior to the above VIN ranges must not under any circumstances, be fitted with the new steel dowels. If steel dowels are fitted to earlier engines cylinder head cracking may result! I wonder if the holes for the steel dowels (on the later engines) are just slightly bigger than the holes for the plastic ones?
Wonder if the earlier heads can just be drilled out slightly to accomodate the stronger dowels? (i'm assuming the steel dowel expands when hot more than the ali head does, hence the cracking) |

That is unlucky, I guess it is 2003MY that has steel.

Mine local indy replaed the plastic with metal, but has them specially made to fit into the plastic holes.
When I get the engine back I will be stripping it to see what has happened. If it turns out their dowels have caused this I may just be tempted to kick up a real fuss. 2002 Defender 110 DC |

i don't see the head moving causing the injectors to leak.
head gasket issues yes. The 10p engines suffer because of the flow and return internal chamber for the fuel. the 15p have an external return pipe and thicker walls on the flow. get it done and get one with it. give it a good run, get it nice and warm. Exactly, usually down to a crack adjacent to one of the injectors. Has anyone been in there removing the injectors in the past? Perhaps they didn't follow the fitting/removal guidelines? Not always the cause though. |

The head gasket went due to the head moving about 8k ago.
The head was pressure tested then and had to be skimmed, so the injectors were taken out then. I am guessing the combination of all these things has caused the failure, I will be keeping the engine and haveing a good look at it as time allows, I have never venture too far into an engine so should be a learning experiance. 2002 Defender 110 DC |

The Td5 is pretty easy. It is worth getting the head crack tested and not just pressure tested. I send ours off to an engineers miles away from us, simply be cause they perform both services. |
