Wheel and tyre help.
I know, I know, another wheel and tyre thread. I have searched (honestly) but can not find the info that I am looking for. Basically, I am looking to buy a new set of wheels and tyres shortly but am very confused about offsets and wheel sizes.

At the present time I have got 265-75/16's fitted on some Aftermarket alloys (not sure what they are). The alloys are 16x7 with an offset of 31.

I am looking to add a bigger set of tyres and have been looking at either 285-75/16 or 33-12.5/15's.

After seeing some pictures of a Defender with 33's fitted (Fekete's) it seems that because everywhere seems to sell them with a -32mm offset that they stick miles outside the arches and I would need to add wider arches to keep it legal which I dont want to do, but with the 285's they seem to be sold with an offset of 0 which if I am correct means that they wont stick out any where near as far?? I think that right anyway!!!

What I want is to have the tyres nice and level with the arches so would the 285's acheive this or would I still need to add spacers to them or could I just use a different offset wheel?? Question

Does anyone have some pics of a Defender with 285's fitted with no spacers and on 0 offset rims so I can see what they look like before I order them as I really can not afford to be buying spacers as well.

Just for infos sake the defender in question has a 2" lift and gets used mainly for laning and off road.

I don't know much about wheels but these are the ones I have and they do not stick out.

The wheels are Compomotive 8.5 x 16 and have ET5 stamped on them.

Cheers. So hopefully I am right in thinking that with an offset of 0 the wheels will be very slightly further inside the arches than yours which should be ok. Wish there was a try before you buy so I could see what they are going to look like before I part with my hard earned!!

Question Question It's the wheels that have the offset NOT the tryes. Thumbs Up

Fekete's wheels are the same size as mine 15 X 10....If memory serves me correctly he has 33 X 12.5 high flotation size boots on. I too have the same size wheels 15 X 10 but 'bottled it' due to not having a lift so went for 32 X 11.5 tyres. I do not have any fouling issues or MOT ones either. The offset is 40mm on Mach 5s. Karlos (Fekete) has some Mach 5s on order which I presume will be the same size as his current Modulars he also has a 2" lift.

Crikey I am even more confused now!! So Fekete's wheels have an offset of -32mm (I think) and yours have an offset of +40mm?? So does that mean that Fekete's rims will stick out 72mm wider than yours will??

I asked Karlos about his wheels a little while back and he pointed me to the place where he got them from and all the 33's on that site were -32mm offset.

Welshdragon has the same alloys as mine, looking at his gallery. They are standard ones with regards to offset - ie. nothing added, nothing taken away.

On mine I have 225/65s and they reasonably 'flat' to the wheel. ie. they fit the rim really well, the tyres not being particularly wide.

Looking at Welshdragon. the 265/75s look squashed out, as if they are only just fitting on the rim, being that bit wider than mine.

I am currently looking at changing to 265/75s and will be getting rims with +8 offset to accomodate the extra width and maintain a good turning circle without rubbing on the hockey sticks. My other half has the same size tyres and rims on his 100" competition motor and are just right - they sit just about in line with the wheel arch, not quite sticking out.

If unsure about what to get, I'd suggest asking those that know about these things - the big wheel/tyre sellers like Craddocks or Devon4x4. They can advise you on what wheel/tyre sizes work for different applications as they sell thousands of 'em!

As an example, Boost alloys have +33 offset which means that 33mm more of the wheel pokes inside compared to the mounting face. I changed to Dotz Dakar steel wheels with +8 offset. Decreasing this offset meant I could ditch my 30mm spacers as the wheels now poke out more by 33 - 8 = 25mm.
My Cooper Maxx 265s sit just level with the arches and, IMHO, look just right (also good turning circle).

ET8 + 265 = Mr. Green Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

WelshDefender, Here is a tyre calculator to help you with what size tyres you pick .....also will tell you the different speedometer readings with bigger tyres...hope this helps Thumbs Up
