Brakes failing??

Evening all,
On the way to work tonight a very peculiar and worrying thing happened, I was approaching a roundabout and applied the brakes for obvious reasons and all of a sudden the brake pedal appeared to travel a lot further than normal, I was in auto-pilot mode really, not day dreaming or anything like that, but when you apply brakes you don't always gauge the travel but it did appear strange and the braking was very poor and I had to release and press down again, then the brakes were normal again, to be honest, they actually felt a little sharper than before. Now I'm not sure if my foot was wet as it has been raining or disc's were wet for the same reason but it all felt a bit odd as I was not expecting it and was not really paying attention, the brakes feel fine now and I must have looked like a bit of a lunatic to nearby motorists as I was pressing the brakes quite randomly and firmly whenever I was clear of traffic to test them, like I said, they feel a bit better than before, anyone else had this? what should I be looking for apart from empty fluid reservoir and fluid on wheels etc.

apart from the master cylinder I would also check for a sticking caliper, especially at the rear. BM52

Thanks for the replies, but, what effect can wheel bearings have on the brakes?

If the bearings are gone, the discs wobble and push the pads back in, so they need to travel further when you press the brake...

My guess is your abs block is goosed...like mine was

Thanks all, found the culprit, it is the offside rear caliper, seized on me whilst going to work again. I carried out a quick check the other day and all appeared ok but then out of the blue there was a grinding noise coming from the back, jacked it up and all was revealed

new discs and pads in tomorrow and service the caliper a bit too

.... I bet it p*sses down all day tomorrow too

Just did my rear brakes, here is the kit list (I know you didnt ask, but in case you find it useful..

)

1. Rear Brake Discs
LR017953 £120.92 PAIR

2. Rear Brake Pads
SFP000270 £50.74

3. Rear Brake Calipers
RH LR005952 £122.05
LH LR005950 £142.38
also a £30 surcharge on the above caliper so old one will need to be returned

4. Any hub seals etc that I need to replace when removing brake discs
FTC4785 X 2 £7.38 pair
571752 X 2 £1.62 PAIR

5. Anything else I need when replacing complete rear brakes..!
RFD100000 X 2 (Hub lock nut) £7.86 PAIR
FTC5241 x 2 (Hub lock washer) £3.48 PAIR

My calipers were siezed and the pads themselves were crumbling, I dont do much mileage, so it think it was just down to lack of use and crappy weather..!

ps Sorry, should have said this list is for a 2001 TD5 with ABS/TC, not sure if that makes a difference..

Thanks for the info Simon, I was hoping the calipers would have just required cleaning and free-ing up a bit, they were worse than I thought, the one side was seized solid and no movement of the cylinder/piston at all, I'm on nightshift this week so they will be coming to work with me and a full overhaul with stainless pistons to be fitted. Hopefully that should be it
