Steering Guard advice
Hi All

Did a search and couldn't find what i was looking for

I want to fit a steering guard to my 2011 Puma, and would like your thoughts on which is the best one to go for

How easy are they to fit?... is drilling required etc?

Steel or other?

I don't think you will find there are any that are bad as such. There should be no drilling involved and should be all just bolted together. Also bear in mind the difference between the alloy guards and the steel guards. Steel will be much stronger but heavier but the alloy the other way around. I personally have a Rebel 4x4 galv steel one strong as you could ever get and have never ever had a problem with it. Only around £60 - £90 mark too.

I had the aluminium steering guard from www.offroadservice.de on my 2003 90 and have put the same one on my Puma. Quality and finish are super. Fits without drilling etc.

You will NOT get any consenus of opinions about what is the best steering guard to go for.

Have heard various arguments from you should not need a steering guard, stick to LR steering guard, use Sumo/Dan bars with or without uprated TRE, plate steering guards act like a plough etc when being recovered backwards.

What I would suggest however is that you avoid the el cheapo/ebay ones like the plague. That is unless you are rich and can afford to buy cheap and replace them.

El cheapo one failed at bolt holes on both sides after about 6 'gentle' recoveries

You pay for what you get, the thicker gauge ones are recommended, galv steel brackets and ali protective plate is a good combination apparently, also consider if you want built in recovery eyes or not Thumbs Up

Have seen many different types of steering guard so rather then just say buy brand X here are a few points to consider.

Recovery eyes are they built in?

If not is it compatible with Jate rings?

Or have you got recovery eyes on your bumper?

Do you need a 2" receiver for moving trailers around/attaching a demountable winch to?

Is the steering guard hot dipped galvanised or electro plated? Hot dip gives more rust protection.

Is there plenty of metal around bolt holes?

Do you need lights built into the steering guard?

Will your steering guard be compatible with anything else you want to mod on your vehicle?
