Puma gearbox overfill ?
At a recent servicing, the gearbox of my Puma Defender was not filled with the 2.2 litres of gearbox oil but to the brim of the filling hole. Does anyone know how much is in the gearbox now ? Is it a risk and should it be drained and refilled or is there no reason to worry ?

Overfilling (i.e., to the hole instead of measuring 2.2L) ill result in the hot oil eating at one of the seals (can't remember which one) and a leak will ensue. --
2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear

I think so. My indie mech also thought he had to fill it to the plug, I told him not to. --

Yes the Puma manual says measure out 2.2 litres...

On mine this was about 3mm below the filler hole. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Yip!

According to the Puma Workshop Manual it is NOT a level plug like in the Td5 but in the Puma only a filler plug and you have to stick to the prescribed amount of oil apparently.

I had about 4.5 litres come out of my 110's gearbox, looks like it got filled twice! I put the recommended 2.2l back in and it runs cooler now Smile

What kind of oil did you put in your gearbox?
As the recommanded one does not exist anymore, I do not know which oil I must get to refill mine.

Anything that conforms to WSD-M2C200-C specs --

Gearbox uses GL-4

Have a look at the Opie Oils website

They list 4 oils for your Defender Gearbox (and a wide price difference!).

The one which is often well reviews is Millers Oils TRX Synth 75w-90 full synthetic gear oil... Link here: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60227-millers-...r-oil.aspx

This Castrol would probably be the closest equivalent to the "standard" LR-recommended oil: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-744-castrol-un...ersal.aspx

Last time i changed the oil I used this: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-739-castrol-sy...5w-85.aspx - seems to work fine Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

My last Land Rover had a R380 gearbox, and at 187000 miles, it had significant wear, and replacement would cost around £1000.

I made the decision to service my new Defender frequently and use top quality lubricants, so as to get the best life I could out of her!

If you stick to the book maintenance schedule, most owners will only ever change the gearbox oil once or twice ("normal" use says 200,000km between gearbox oil changes), so IMHO it's a job worth doing well! That's why I bought fully synth good quality oil... I'll use fully synth top-quality oils, and change them every 2nd year. Hopefully it'll be more economical in the long run by making the gearbox last a very, very, long time Thumbs Up

When I wrote these lube are very expensive, I didn't mean I would prefer to put cheap oil in my gearbox. I was just comparing the prices on your links, to the price I can get the same oils in France (Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75w90 is about 8£/liter VAT incl. here). Moreover, I used to get the oils for my landies to a wholesaler at about 3£/liter... but it is not Castrol.
