Powdercoating wheels
Forgive what may sound like a totally stupid post...

Just out of a purely practical point of view... if I only have the one set of wheels/tyres, how would I go about getting my rims powdercoated? Surely it would be off the road several days? Not particularly (read: at all) familiar with powdercoating and the processes involved but do I just decide that for a week my landy is out of action whilst its wheels get sprayed?

I really want some ZUs but I've decided that I probably want to get myself some new tyres first so I reckon spraying my current alloys in black would keep me satisfied until I can afford them!

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Don't powder coat wheels. The action of replacing the tyres will damage it sufficiently to let in water and ruin the coating.
Proper wheel paint is the only way to go.

Powder coating is a 'baking' type process so tyres will have to come off rims.

So you will be landyless for a few days, whilst you have the rims powder coated. Cost of powder coating? Start thinking £10+ for each rim

Then it will be a case of refitting/rebalancing the rims.

Zu's are a good rim made reasonably local to us.

Look carefully at the DOT code on your existing tyres, tyre tread depth and for signs of rubber cracking either circumferous close to rim or between tread blocks. If your DOT code is 05 or less start thinking about replacing them sooner rather then later.

I agree with the above post, having the wheels sprayed is a better option In my opinion.

Xatzhs I have been thinking of looking into finding one of the local mobile alloywheel repair guys who may well also offer a wheel spray service. Easier than leaving your landie up on blocks however theft proof that may make it Wink

I was quoted £35 each for a wheel, but that was a three coat process so maybe that's why.

Didn't think about damage when replacing wheels/tyres but wouldn't that be the same if the wheels were painted? I guess less of a problem with alloys than steels (my steels have gone rusty, but not the edges, the inside part - didn't spot the thread re sealing them with silicone Crying or Very sad )

I have a set of alloys to come , so they may need/want a colour change, so maybe paint is the way to go.

If you want a quick and easy conversion to black then think about Plastidip www.plastidip.co.uk . The americans love this (look on youtube for DipYouCarcom for demos) can subsequently be peeled off when you want to go back to original, but appears to be durable is use. You can do it with wheels in situ, you might want to gloss them after (you'll need the 'glossifier' as well). Popular on the Subaru forums what what I've seen. Might have a go on my steels. Also some good Youtube videos from others using it on phones etc - looks fun!

Haha this just shows how ignorant I am of it all!

I do in fact want them resprayed! Thinking of keeping them for a while to have a set of winter tyres on (eventually) and the ZUs for the rest of the year (probably a year or so away from actually getting them).

As for my tyres, I will have a look in a week or so, not actually around to check them out right now, though they are standard General Grabbers TR with about 50k miles on them, don't know about how hard the first 40k were though cos it wasn't mine then!

As for the DOT code... what does that mean? I will duly have a little search after I post this though don't worry!

New ZU rims are what...? Upwards of £150 per rim?

Thanks for the info everyone so far!

Powder coating is straight forward process and it can be done in a day max. The most time consuming job is to remove/fit tires. Puma 110" SW

This has really confused me Sorry Laurie I've refurbed one or two wheels and not once has the above action happened

Powdercoat is way more durable than Paint Thumbs Up

I've had plenty powdercoated in the past too... no hassles at all.

If you can scrounge some odd wheels from friends, at least you'll be able to drive around a bit and keep mobile whilst you get your existing wheels re-coated.

Is that each wheel or for a set of 4/5 ?

Oh well in that case I DO want them powdercoated again haha!

Anywhere good near Oxford? Not too fussed about it being off for a few days, but more than a week and it would probably be annoying. How long roughly to get a good powdercoat?

Also c.£40 x 4 is still about the price of 1 x ZU rim haha!

Thanks for the pics by the way Thumbs Up

two of my sets are powder coated. picked up some off road damage too and no problems with them, granted the bit where the paint was knocked off has rusted but it hasn't flaked back like the old style of powder coating used to. Cheers
