Help - Odyssey 1500 Dual Battery installation
Hello All,

I'm after any photos / help showing the installation of twin Odyssey 1500 batteries with Blue Sea Voltage Controlled Relay. I am also installing a Blue Sea fuse box, a winch solenoid and two circuit breakers - so I have a lot to cram in the space.

In particular, I'd like to see how the existing LR positive battery clamp fits (the one with the 500Amp mega fuse built-in) and whether anyone has used a second LR battery clamp on the Auxiliary battery.

I know that there are several posts on the subject, but any pictures would be really appreciated. I have also got a copy of the Land Rover Defender modification book (Lindsay Porter / LRM)

I've got to get the job finished next weekend. Shocked

Many thanks,

Peter Defender 11MY USW

Sorry no photo but I have a Devon4x4 battery tray, this levels the base of the battery box and provides clamps for both. You then turn the batteries 90 degrees to make the best of the space.

Used Fatdog bar and a tray -( not sure who made as I bought at same time -

In box - No have Red Top / Yellow Top

Split charge relay, Heavy Duty durite Winch control - I decided to put the additional fuse box under drivers seat as I also wanted a small distribution board with Anderson poles- and it gives much more space -

Hi All,

Brilliant! I knew that I could rely on Defender2. Many, many thanks. Bow down

Some questions:

discocuzzy:

Did you connect the winch directly to the positive terminal, or via the 500Amp mega fuse?

bpman:

I am also using the D44 battery tray - how did you fit the Blue Sea fuse box to the battery bar? Sounds like a neat solution.

Once again many thanks for everyone's help. Talk about a picture worth a thousand words. Thumbs Up

All the best,

Peter Defender 11MY USW

Before installing the d44 battery tray, make sure you fill any holes in the base and sides, then dinitrol the area to be covered by the battery tray

Make sure you get a genuine bluesea fuse box, the copies are too tall and won't fit.

The fuse box in the picture has been removed and a Bluesea one fitted to the top of the battery holder bar.

If you want, PM me your email address and I will email you a photo of the finished item.

BPmans solution for mounting the fuse box is a neat idea, just ensure that each cable has sufficient slack in them so the bar + fuse box can be moved.

In our red 110 we have the Blue Sea fuse box which was fine with the original batteries in place. Now with bigger batteries in place I can not replace fuses without removing a battery! Thud Need to rethink and redo that battery box. Yes things change over time so just ensure you can readily access the fuse box!

Blue Sea make some class leading gear based on the marine industry.

There fuse box has a foot print of 83 x 164 mm and a height of 38 mm and cost £50

The Ripca version has a footprint of 95 x 164mm and is 57 mm high and cost £31.

Both have a rating of max 30 amps/fuse and 100 amps/block of 6 fuses.

Both have negative bus bars

The Ripca version has separate +ve terminal for each bank of 6 fuses whereas the Blue Sea one has a common one for both banks of fuses

Visual differences include brighter shiner stainless parts on the Blue Sea version in comparison to the Ripca.

Brendan

PS Yes we have both versions in stock Razz

Hi Brendan,

This is another on of those jobs were I bought the bits months ago and we go on holiday a week tomorrow! Shocked

I like the idea of mounting the fuse box on top of the batteries (aka bpman's solution) - I'll see how I get on at the weekend. The fridge is installed but no power ..... Rolling Eyes

How long would you expect that I could run the ARB fridge off one Odyssey battery, assuming that it was at temperature?

Once again, really pleased with our gear.

All the very best,

Peter your question is a bit like how long is a bit of string.

There are lots of variables, outside temperature. set temperature of fridge, how often you go into the fridge, what temperature the replacement items are at, what level you set the battery cut off level at.

The 1500 is a 68amp hour battery and the 'average' current draw of fridge is about 0.8 amps/hour. That would give you an anticipated maximum run time of about 85 hours and an extremely flat battery.

Realistically I would say expect 48 hours and then start to recharge battery.

YES I am being conservative but remember the main function of your batteries are to start your engine.
