Good idea or stupid - Sound proofing method

OK mateys what do you think.

Been thinking about the engine compartment sound proofing options and I know all about the lead blankets and adhesive pads etc but what about this?

As the inside of my bonnet is sprayed with Dinitrol, sticky pads would be a faf. So what if I was to remove the bonnet and fill it with expanding fire proof foam which when set firm could easily be trimmed around the edges for a neat smooth finish. I would guess it would have reasonable sound proofing qualities, be fire retardent and dead easy to do and because the Puma bonnet has lots of gaps it should hold in place regardless of the Dinitrol.

Any drawback? What am I missing?

Can't see why it shouldn't work

Remove the bonnet, lay it upside down and spray away. Once its set, like you say, a nice long blade to trim it down.

DGARDEL - how are you getting on with the acoustic cover off the 2.2 installed on your 2.4 ??? Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

..is humidity likely to occur under the bonnet, I realise that the engine can be very hot and outside at night the temperature can fall way below but I have never seen any condensation on the inside of the bonnet. Also with the foam in direct contact with the underside would that not prevent water droplets forming?

Just thoughts ???

I'd say that stuff is too light-weight to offer any significant sound proofing qualities. Vehicle sound proofing usually relies on density. Darren

No, it's 'fire rated expanding foam'. Its' intended use is stopping of holes through fire rated walls, ceilings, etc. around services and the like in buildings. Darren

I did think about filling the chassis with expanding foam to stop water getting in and to prevent condensation

may even make it float
