Cigarette lighter socket, no keys
I want to use the cigarette lighter socket to charge my phone without having to leave the ignition switched on, ie with no keys left in ignition. I could spend £2000+ on a dual battery system that would be overkill for what I need. Yes I will be careful with it. Is there a way to do this ?

Easy, replace the existing positive feed on the back of the cigar lighter socket with a fused permanent supply.

Which model Defender do you have (Puma / TD5 / 300) ?

The Puma dash is easy to take out, just remove the two 'obvious' screws from the facia, the facia is then held with clips that require you to pull the facia forwards with your fingers gripping the moulding at the top above the centre airvents (note the heater turny controls stay where they are so dont try and pull them)

Once pulled forwards the rear of the cigar socket is easily reached and it is the centre spade connection that you are replacing. Just pull the old one off and put some insulation tape over the end of the redundant connector for protection (and to identify it if you want to reinstall at anytime)

A new 'Permanent' live can be found on the Hazard light switch, use a circuit tester (or somebody with the correct colour code will be along soon) - Scotchlocks are frowned upon so soldering would be better - make sure you run an additional fuse inline for safety's sake ....

As above, spot on but personally I would take the permanent feed from the Stereo. Most have a secondary output (bullet connector) on the yellow wire.

At least then if you short it the stereo fuse blows and you just lose music.

Good point, I just wasn't sure that the Stereo feed would be 'man enough'

Better still run a new feed from the battery via an inline fuse. Not difficult.

I ran a 16mm^2 earth and live from the battery to the engine bay (Live is fused as close to the battery as possible). This wire is run on the outside, prperly armoured and tied down out of the way (Running on top of the ladder chassis. Here I installed a beefy 6 blade fuse box. From here I go back through the firewall (smaller wires) and thus have a seperate 12V that can handle ALLOT of Amps, should the need arise (eg. inverters etc....). I dont like to tamper with the existing wiring, and if that fuse goes you have to dismantle the dash again.

or use the purple and black wires in the rear behind the speaker, and fit a socket there (Brendan has a good selection of 12v sockets) and you can throw a coat over your phone so it's not on display

and it's already fused Thumbs Up

Another option is to run a seperate fused feed from the battery to the cubby box area and fit a socket there. It means that everything is in reach and it's easy to check nothing is left plugged in when you get out unless you want it to be.

Not that it helps here, but an old Peugeot I used to have, on the fuse box you could pull the cigarette lighter fuse out and insert it in one of 2 positions, one gave permanent live, the other ignition switched.

Quite a handy bit of thought that was.
