Keep at it until the warranty runs out and maybe beyond, it's disheartening to know that so much of the coated factory bolt on stuff these days is guaranteed to get shabby so quickly. Steve.

I must admit (sadly) that with 3 Land Rovers in the family (only 1 Defender) I kind of expect and worryyingly sometimes I seem to think it's normal. MrsK's Evoque is faring better than the Defender. My old Disco2 also fared better than the Defender!
But rather than replacing the bits, I've just been re-furbishing & re-finishing mine. I used to use Hammerite & Waxoyl (on the Disco) Now trying POR-15, Dinitrol & ACF with the Defender after the good advice on this forum (see Zag's excellent thread). You shouldn't have to do this, but it seems the only way to keep it in good shape. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

I would suggest that even with smothering everything with rust preventative [as I have done] the finish on some bolt on bits is still going to flake and rust. Mudflap brackets, side and rear steps, bumpers and such are currently just not prepared and finished to a high enough standard in the first place. Steve.

Thanks guys for reaffirming my thoughts and for your advice.
I have wax oiled, although, admittedly, a bit of a diy job and now wishing I had taken the time to outsource full under body protection....not that any of this would have saved the shoddy finish on all the bolt ons! I would hate to see the state of it if it hadn't been looked after... Started swapping out all the rusty bolts with SS that I got from Nakatenga and Stig, I just don't want it to start looking bling. Rang Lloyds today and the are going to order all the bits in, not sure what I'm going to do with the weeping hinge pins though! Cheers, Leon. |

Leon - sadly the new parts that LR supply for you are likely to go the same way as your current ones in time. By all means have them replaced under warranty, but it may be worth considering keeping the old take-offs and having them blasted and re-finished professionally elsewhere. Depending on where you take them (and who is available to you locally) it shouldn't be overly expensive to have this done. That way, when the new ones flake and rust (and your warranty has expired) you will have a full set of shiny new bits to replace them with which are much better finished than the LR originals. I had my front bumper, rear crossmember (in-situ obviously), mudflap brackets professionally blasted and re-sprayed around 18 months ago and still looking exactly as they did when it came out of the paint shop (albeit with liberal coating of ACF50 every few months). 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Hi Green Machine,
Sadly you are 100% right, I have already considered this, but i decided to keep going back until my warranty is up, then get the bits re-finshed professionally. I did consider asking if I could keep the old bits, but presumed that they would go back to LR, maybe I should have! Not sure what finish to get eventually though, what did you have applied? Cheers, Leon. |

I just had mine blasted back to bare metal and then re-sprayed with a couple of coats of primer and a couple of coats of satin black. Had it done by a local place who specialize in classic car restoration. Have to say they did a top job. IIRC it was around £300, but that included some bodywork touching up as well - oh and the spare wheel carrier too. Powder coating would be a good alternative if you have someone reasonably local who could do it - would probably give a more uniform and tougher coating than paint. Depends on what paint is used I suppose.
As far as I'm aware, you are within your rights to request old parts taken off your vehicle be returned back to you, although that may be different for warranty claims? Perhaps someone can confirm that. My local indy always keeps any parts he's taken off mine to show me afterwards - just because he's like that. He also keeps all the boxes of the genuine parts he's used to show me too. There aren't many main dealers who would bother with that sort of thing. Anyway, hope that's helpful. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green |

Noticed some rust spots on rear mudflaps and some underbody bits too! So one could rightly take it to the dealer and they will replace it but I don't want to be leaving my van there every few months until the warranty runs out!

It is frustrating and inconvenient continually going back to the dealers to get inferior items swapped out...I tired of it even before my warranty ran out. Here was my 'spin' on it and I'm still doing it now....
Still 'getting there' now..... If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |
