Evening gentlemen,
I brief introduction, I have been wanting to get a new set of wheels and tyres for my 60 plate defender. I have decided on the modular steel wheels with either Cooper STT (probably these), Cooper ST Maxx or BFG muds. I couldn't decide on the tyre size I was going to go for, either 265 or 285. I have a 90 and after searching the forum thought that a 285 tyre looks a bit (dare I say it) too big . Please feel free to post some pics to sway me After seeing this pic on the forum, I was sold. I can't remember the owner of the vehicle and sorry for using your pic in advance. He states that he is on 265 A/T with an 8” rim. This looks to give more of a deep dish compared to 7” and I think it looks great. Anyway, my question. I emailed John Craddocks to see if they could supply a package and they have told me they "wouldn't recommend" fitting a 265 to an 8" rim. Can someone explain why this is? Personally I would have thought it to be fine. Many thanks, Simon https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/u...G_0317.JPG |

Dunno why Craddock would say that
Recommended rim width for 265/75 tyres is 7 - 8.5 inch, so 8 " is perfect Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

They are 265 tyres on an 8" rim?
You've never heard of it causing problems? |

I've got 265 STTs on eight inch modulars, and they've never given me a moments problem. (Plenty of pictures in my gallery). Peter

265s are fine on 7" rims so 8" ones won't be any problem John

Craddocks will feel a 265 is to narrow for an 8 j rim
Same train of thought that A 285 is too wide for a 7 J Each to there own however the former is fine and the latter well that's up to you |

I think that is what Craddocks are trying to say, that 265 is too narrow a tyre for an 8" rim. There seems to be plenty of you with them. That's enough reassurance for me.
Cheers lads. |

Quick question Fekete - do you know if that guy will sell a package deal (wheels and tyres)?
I'll probably give him a ring tomorrow, just wondered if you knew? |

Mine are 265 75 16 on an 8 inch rim.
I think what you were trying to get at with the deeper dish of the wheel bit is more to do with the offset of the wheel rather than its size. I was after the same look, which also pushes the wheels out a little further than usual giving the truck a wider stance, but at the cost of having the doors sprayed with crud any time you go through a puddle! That said they fit without any issues and I have had them fully articulated and they did not foul the arches. Try Silverline for a deal if you are afte Coopers.
